Knocking noiseGot a knocking noise from the back of the car every time i pull away,
Can it be the back shocks? There's no knocking noise when i go over bumps just when pulling away, It's not loud but it's fooking annoying me Any idears? Cheers j Last edited by Foley on Mon Apr 19, 2010 10:23 am, edited 2 times in total.
Focus ST's rule!!!
Did they not check them when you had it serviced? I was lucky i got 3 replaced under waranty, It might not be your shockers but lets face it it's a weakness with them and there's a good chance that will be your problem. A bit o a bugger I imagine it wont be cheap?
Na they never said anything to me about the shocks Need to go and price a set of shocks now at subaru Think i'll just store the wr1 away and for winter and get everything needing done after xmas, Or the kids wont get anything fae santa claus lol Focus ST's rule!!!
Get some coil overs foley no point wasting money on subaru shocks they'll only go again in another two years.

Cheers sounds a better idear to get coil overs than put subaru's pish shocks back on, How can i check to make sure it's the shocks? Focus ST's rule!!!
Aye, what Adam says I paid £300 a side for mine with 3 year/60k mile warranty.... once they go I'll be changing for something else!!
Exe-tc's hmmmmmm See you Monday Adam. [Just incase this gets lost in translation, I am not slandering you, I know people can be sensitive to these harsh words.]
the noise you're describing can only be rear shocks, if you jack the rear of the car up and pull up the shock boot the inner chrome part will look tarnished in places due to the shock sticking. push down on the rear of the car with the boot open so you don't damage the panel and if the shocks are totally gone the car won't move. hope that helps. Expose the chrome part and get some lubrication on there. IT WILL stop that lumpy feeling you feel when you pull off. Mines been like it for nearly 2 yrs and I lubricate them every 3 months....works a treat !
Do you use oil or grease to lub them up? Should it knock when am going up through the gears? Cheers j Focus ST's rule!!!
our local subaru dealer tests for knackered shocks by pushing down on the boot whilst the car is stationary if that helps.
btw foley when did you get the car back and apart from the shocks is it all ok again now mate?
Got the car back mate all is fine apart fae the back shocks, Will try and push down the boot tomorrow, Cheers j Focus ST's rule!!!
glad to hear it mate
are the coilovers still fitted inverted? if so wont they suffer the same issue as the standard ones... as a guide ive had my rear shockers changed by subaru 6months after getting the car then again within another 12 months under warranty. if i spent a bomb on coilovers which all seem to only come with 12months warranty unlike the subaru 3yr warranty id be gutted if they started to knock too due to the same design fault 18months down the line.
Is a knocking nose caused by the nodding dog being to close to the rear screen
2007 BMW M5
2004 Petter Solberg STi
It could be Foleys nodding churchill dog on his parcel shelf...
The shocks are by definition not 'broken' because they knock.
When I had the issue on my STi, I had a good dig around at the cause. Turns out that the seals are giving up after a while. That means dirt can enter the shockabsorber AND you get some play (fraction of a millimeter). We couldn't reproduce the noise, unless we were driving and when they took the shocks off, the mechanic showed that, by moving the shaft sideways, you got a bit of a clonk and a very small amount of play. Risk is that you replace them with the same shocks.
