Went over to Zen yesterday to get Paul to check out why the car was running lean on idle at 17:1 with fuel trims all over the place. The car was running lumpy and not great fun to drive. (AFR was mostly fine whilst on the move)
After checking all IC/induction hoses for leaks, splits and anything out of the ordinary and checking dump valve, it was decided that the MAF sensor is probably the cause. This may have been dirty at the time of the last mapping or deteriorating. Paul cleaned the MAF and by amending the map managed to get it idling right and a lot smoother in closed loop which made for a much more pleasant drive home that is for sure It seems a lot smoother coming on and off boost than it has for a while so this issue may have existed for some time. I am back there next thursday for a full mapping session and we can then swap the maf to see if this entirely fixes the issue and get the full potential out of the car ready for Knockhill. While I was there, I had a lot of time to study the Zen TA car Duncan : www.racedynamix.com

Well, what a day mapping over at Zen Performance !!!
Having left there last week having cured why it was running lean at idle due to a dirty MAF sensor, the idea today was to finish the mapping and get it running sweetly in order to show the potential in the engine, turbo and other ancillaries ...... and I think we did it Previously I had got it mapped to 1.6 bar with occasional peaks above that. Today I wanted a full 2 bar of boost heaven as the engine and turbo will all take it. It started well enough but when boost was wound up during rescaling the MAF table for the now clean and fully functional MAF it started to develop a misfire, this same misfire had been there in various guises for a while but never cured itself not allowed outside intervention on the mapping to cure it. Plugs were changed for some NGK racing 8's as inspection showed the plugs gaps were well out and not surprisingly misfiring. After the plug change, it was a different animal - what a beast Paul wound it up to 1.8 bar and it sang so sweetly that we just had to go further 2 Bar was an easy step and the whole nature of the car changed from reasonably placid and sometimes temperamental road car that also goes on track, to a devil in disguise. The sounds changed, the thrust back into the seat (even 2 up) was stunning and it just kept going so strong that I was giggling like a 5 year old. I think I can safely say it will be quite adequate Got home not long ago shaking with excitement :pmsl: Knockhill will be perfect Duncan : www.racedynamix.com

Gave it a run out yesterday at a sprint at Honington airfield in Suffolk. It was primarily a day to train timekeepers but a 1.8km course was laid out on the airfield around cones and it was superb fun in the sunshine with some great cars there including 2 GT3 RS. One of these had the nicest carbon wheels you have ever seen at £2.5k a wheel
Idea for the day was just to test out recent changes and see if it will run reliably at full boost in hot conditions. Ambient temps were at over 30 deg C sitting in the queue to set off and charge temp gauge was showing 42 deg whilst sitting on the line so not ideal for caning it. Didnt quite get the launches right and kept bogging down at the start (i really need to practie these before doing any drag runs) but got away cleanly and into the course. A few fast right handers to start with and then a long anti clockwise oval through the finish. Speed were kept pretty low due to it being a training day but still hit the top end of 4th gear so around 100 mph on the grit strewn surface Managed to bag the fastest time of the day I believe and ran quite confortable without det even at the high boost setting - topping out at 2.1 bar of boost No problems at all with the car and headed home at lunchtime quite pleased with myself ad the car. It is starting to come together now Duncan : www.racedynamix.com

Got it on the rollers yesterday to measure the power....
Measured at 465.3bhp on std pump fuel Also got over 400 lb/ft of torque from 3500 to 6000 - should make for reasonably swift progress Duncan : www.racedynamix.com

Also got the fuel surge tank fitted to get rid of that problem for good.
This is in the engine bay with a bosch 044 pump hiding underneath to feed the rails. the std walbro in the tank feeds the pot and keeps it full. Duncan : www.racedynamix.com

Well, this is quite a hard one to write.... the car performed beautifully, faultlessly and never skipped a beat apart from popping a hose right at the end but yet I am disappointed.
Friday's travel up there with Ren and Lee was lengthy but steady progress was made with the car on the trailer and we finally arrived at the hotel. Not the smartest in the world but it was fine for our purposes Saturday's SIDC track morning was great fun in the wet taking some time to refamiliarise myself with the track and to get used to the new power and delivery, but without risking it all for nothing as more than anything I wanted to be at the start line. Gutted for Mike (and the others that had late issues such as Bart). The car was great and apart from a small hesitation coming onto boost with part throttle was perfect. Great day in all but this didnt disappoint me. Saturday night out was a great curry and the normal talking bollox over a drink. This was no disappointment. Sunday arrived and car checked over by my able pit crew (cheers guys) I felt confident about pushing myself and the car. First warm up and I was comfortable with the time that I had done, confident that I could improve. Again the car was perfect but getting hot oil after just a few laps forcing me to back off for a couple of laps before trying hard again for 2 more. Not a huge issue but it meant timing it to get some free track for the laps when I could get on it. Practice was fun, pushing myself further, extending braking points, but struggling with traction out of the corners. I was disappointed I didnt break the 1 minute. Again no issues with the car and not only that the oil breathing problem had been solved completely and fuel surge was well and truly cured running down to empty and not experiencing it. Now time for qualifying, it was judgement time. I failed was not quick enough and was extremely disappointed with myself. I believed I was pushing hard getting far more aggressive than I have ever done on track (this circuit needs to be grabbed by the scruff of the neck) and found holes in traffic to do the business (mostly) but I was not on the pace or as committed as others must have been. No excuses. Time for reflection. Or rather, time for a large amount of alcohol and talking shite all night with some great company - the friendliness of the vast majority of the TA group is overwhelming and very humbling. Cheers George@DCY and Barrie for getting my head straight - great to meet you both finally. I can reflect on events today and have a plan now but a complete lack of time between now and Silverstone for anything other than fitting the oil cooler from Alyn at ASP that in hindsight I really needed to have had on there all weekend. If the weekend had been a track day, I would say that it is the best fun I have ever had on track. This is the best the car has ever been. But it needs to improve to just keep up with the rapidly improving field. I need to improve with it and most importantly I need to look to see how the car and I can work better together. I'm sure some more time getting used to the car, and some tweaks here and there will get yoyu up the field mate

Really interesting post that, Duncan. Gutted for you that it felt like a slight disappointment, especially after all the build-up, but chin-up - you've learnt a lot and your pragmatism and honesty shine through. There will be more chances and I'm sure you will capitalise on them.
Keep going
Cheers guys
I have started on other jobs to get the car ready for Silverstone next weekend: 1) Re-align the IC pipework to remove the stress point that is stretching the silicone joiner pipe in front of the cam covers. This had about a 1/2 inch misalignment and with the movement of the engine gave that hose a hard time eventually forcing it off. It is dead centre now and I am confident that it is solved. 2) Get cold air to the induction kit. Since I robbed the cold air feed to give the brakes some ducting I needed to give some cold air back. 3) fit the oil cooler. These last two jobs involved getting the hole saw out (quite good for relieving stress ) The oil cooler placement: Some holes to give it some cool air Induction side With protective mesh Duncan : www.racedynamix.com
