1. Send me your address and clean up the guest room.

2. I don't know which Evo you had, but one of the things that irritated the hell out of me on my 2003 STi was the cheap materials they used, especially the cloth on the seats. After 3 years and 25K miles, all plastics had a different colour, the cloth on the seats had worn badly,... I find the IX built with much more attention to build quality.
Maybe there are some bigger tolerances with the Jap cars than with the German ones though.

I can't believe you are discussing interior build quality of a Scooby v Evo...

I think you are illustrating well the point I made to Gee here yesterday: you give your car qualities it doesn't have.

Now unless Subaru radically changed the materials for MY2004, or you hardly use your car (how many miles has yours done on 5 years?), the materials used in the STI were really below standard.

Start with the upholstery. At the front, you have this kind of alcantara but then they put this cheap black cloth next to it that tears very easily. Why not put leather straight away?

Then move to the back and just wonder why they had to skimp on a bit of alcantara there for the centre of the seats. Why was it so necessary to put that cheap kind of velvet lookalike there that changes colour at a different rate making the car look really tatty after few years.

Of course, you have owned scoob and Evo and combined with your self righteousness, that makes your statement the 11-th commandment...

I'm gonna start calling you Mozes soon !

But now you are on the topic, just like you I have kicked the odd tyre in the past. One of them being an Evo VIII and Evo IX. Without doubt, the quality of a Scooby is poor, hence the "bang for buck" experience. Regards the "tatty" condition - one can only assume this is something to do with how you look after your cars or the cheap cleaning guys you employ? My car is 5 years old and certainly DOES NOT look tatty.

Evo quality - build quality was the main reason we walked away from the Evo.... along with driver experience and lack of character. Each to their own.

Neither the scoob or the Evo had anyone looking after them. Both were used as fast family cars in harsh circumstances.

The scoob aged very badly inside and out.

Mechanically, the Evo didn't age as well though.

As for driving experience, the Evo indeed has less character on normal driving. It only comes through when nailing it.

pmsl, you'd never venture this far north swede, I'm even further north than sweden, I'm only a hundred miles from the north pole here!!

I had a IV RS a V GSR and they would all fall apart if you went over a cattle grid

The Scoobs are better built no question about it, Though I can relate to what you were saying about the Blue carpet however they didnt put that in the WR1, which I felt was a very well put together car, except the shoddy suspension on the rear of course.

You seem to have taken the same geography class as Gee ! (and the rest of the Brits  )

Back on topic...

This remains tempting. Plus, easy to drive, way less money than a 911 or M3 and it sounds like God himself

Been doing some more tyre-kicking, as the old grumpy skinge would call it.

Not entirely convinced by the 911 and R8, I thought I'd give the Evo X anyway a try.

Drove the FQ360 today.

First impressions:

1. Styling:
- Way too cluttered inside to be a driver focussed car. Whistles and bells are the last thing I need when blasting along a country lane.

2. Shit... It's big !

3. It is WAAYYY more comfortable than the Evo IX. It rides way more comfortable than the old Impreza actually.

4. Whereas the old car was even wild in 340bhp, this one in 360 is smooth. Twin scroll turbo gets the blame as the power seems to be there when you watch the speedo and feel the wheels look for grip.
Still, first thing you'd need to do is dump the cat' and remap it to be way more brutal.

5. Handling: It drives totally different. I am actually unsure if making the engine more brutal would really work as the car is much less 'stiff' and does not fight with you anymore.
In the 'old days', an Evo would be precise but you'd have to push it to get it to life. Once on (/over) that limit, you had to remain hardhanded to maintain it in the right direction. A scoob would slide more easily but would be more extreme in its reactions (under- or oversteer) but also less dangerous.
The Evo X, you can slide it your eyes closed, provided you switch off the traction control those idiots fitted on it.

With this new system, they actually went a step too far as rather than just giving more power to the outside rear wheel (the old AYC), the current system wants to be a German-style nanny and help you corner.

So there is the salesman proudly showing how he could go around a roundabout fast with the car keeping him in line.

Next he gave the keys to me. First thing: Electronic nanny OFF. First roundabout a little flick to the left to unsettle the car and the thing drifted around with the easy of an 1985 BMW. :)
Too easy though as you don't have the feeling it's gonna kill you anymore.
(Still had the salesman screaming )

Conclusion:
Just like most cars nowadays: Boring. :(

Would need much more power, more sound and more rigid suspension.

Well, TBH, it was kinda unexpected. I had switched the nanny off and as the car did not accelerate in an impressive way, I thought I was pretty slow so I floored it all the way to the roundabout where I then thought I had to help the car a bit because, sure, this thing was gonna be lazy.
Amnesic and off-minded as I am, I had of course forgotten I had switched off the traction control.

It wasn't lazy at all and I was pretty surprised myself as it went sideways straight away. Since we carried some speed, and it was a big roundabout, I just layered it on a bit and the guy sat next to me, nailed into the chair screaming "How is this possible ? It shouldn't have done that ! What did you do? You probably upset the electronics !"

I never told him I switched grandma off, just went "I dunno, simply throw it around. You should try harder yourself next time".

He did take me back straight to the dealership via the dual carraige way though :?

Typical Swede at his best... Mind, it isn't hard to terrify a car salesman.

I had a BMW salesman tell me I couldn't turn the traction control off as it "invalidated their insurance"... Needless to say I turned it off and was egged on by the wife to scare him... So I pulled my pants down and squeezed his knee.

Ive driven the X FQ300 SST and tbh came to the same conclusion as swede - much nicer ride and pleasant place to be - but no longer an evo.

I did try the new scoob hatch 330S thing back at the start of the year and that was actually much better than I expected. There is potential in that new car, just needs to be unlocked.

I bet he just ran out of the car and didn't even bother reporting it as 'missing' out of fear you'd find out where he lives
