Driving Day - Porsche 911 Turbo

Postby John Mc » Sat Feb 14, 2009 3:18 pm

Drove one of these today on a driving day and got to say it was a lot more refined than the 1 but I didn't get the same "feeling" of power..... maybe it was just that you notice the lag on the single turbo 1 and when it hits you, you feel the torque?!?.... the twin turbos of the porsche probably fill in the lag of the bigger turbo and side by side you would see a difference but I didn't get a 'wow' factor like I did when I first got in the 1!!

The response seemed to be quite tame and certainly 'felt' no quicker to pick up than the 1....I was waiting for something exciting to happen a lot of the time as I came out of the bends but it was just a smooth surge all the way through the range. I'd heard people saying they were unpredictable when provoked but I didn't get that feeling, I wasn't driving cautiously either and the track was damp..... might go and see if it had the right turbos in it and it wasn't a "Redline special"!!!

Anyone else driven one of these or owns/ed one? Be interested to see whether you agree or disagree... Overall, I'd be a tad disappointed if I had splashed out £100k on one of these.

So not a buy then ?

I drove the normally aspirated 911 on several occasions and although it is not as brutal or fast as a properly tuned scoob or Evo, I would have it any time over a rice-rocket.

The way that thing is balanced, sounds and drives is just amazing.

The nicest one I found was the normal 911 C2 as it sounds nicer than the S and you do not really feel the difference in performance.
It does need the PASM though as without it, I got the car very unsettled on a series of bumpy corners.

So any alternatives ? Ever considered the SL63 AMG ? If you want brutal torque in a sportscar, you won't be dissappointed.

I love the Porsche 911, looks, sound etc etc and they are certainly more refined than the Scooby but as a "drivers car", I'd expect more paying 5-10 times that of a Scooby STi which is an all round very capable car and "whole life costs" are a lot less.

Is there a noticeable difference between a 911 C2, C4S and a 911 Turbo? The C2 got a good review on top gear but Hammond loves Porkers so I'm a bit dubious when he gives a report on them!!

I was just a little dissapointed when you weigh up expectations against experience.... I suppose I was expecting more, a 911 turbo was always my dream car when I was a kid!!

I haven't been in a merc 63 but I did have an AMG CLK55 when I lived in Brazil and although a very different car, mercs are not my cup of tea tbh, straight lines are fun but I wasn't filled with confident going into fast bends!! I'm sure that the 63 is a different car altogether... I have seen all the reviews and the stats are impressive.

Alternatives.... I'd certainly like to have a trackday in an M5 to see what they are really like (and of course the 63   )....

are you on about a 996 or 997 turbo? I assume quoting 100k you are talking about the current 997 model. If it didnt wow you, and didnt feel faster than your wr1 it must have been broken. I drove one and was amazed at the power delivery. it was WAY quicker than a standard wr1. Also as Swede says a fantastic package, really, really well balanced car.

driven the c2s and c4s (and picking up a c4s on Satuday for a couple of days :D ) and turbo. the turbo feels way quicker than the other 2, and I mean way quicker, not much difference between the c2s and c4s as the c2s has enough grip tbh. both fantastic cars IMO

996 Dan. I didn't know the price, but thought it was upwards of 90k.

Don't get me wrong, it was very quick but in 3rd and 4th I felt myself waiting for "quicker" torque delivery but it was just smooth all the way. Maybe it disguises the delivery very well but I was expecting to have to back off but felt myself wanting more!!

It was very well balanced and I began accellerating through the apex's earlier and earlier as I got used to it. I know for a fact that I'd have waited slightly longer in the WR1 to get the power on so maybe it is just that it is superbly well balanced that it made it easier to drive?? I still love them and would still aspire to own one but was a little dissapointed after driving one that's all.

bang on JM.....

Sold my 1 and bought one, was the worst misatake ever.

Indeed they dont have the sensation of speed, but are rapid enough, but very "refined" and composed, you have to be trying very hard or being a right hooligan to lose a 996!

Took me a few goes to get it to spin out at Brunters :toofunny:

I woudl be intrigued at the 997 but too much money at the mo, will be interested to see what Dan thinks of the C2s 997....this I could be tempted with again!!

Here's a picture of them for a little dribble...............

Confused.com.... SLM!?!

Have you got a WR1 at the mo or a Porker (or both?) The turbo is a fantastic car, I'm not "dissing" it in any way, if I had the money I would probably still buy one but maybe the 997!!

Overated stretch beetles imho

Had the use of a 993 for 18 months, the steering wheel was off centre, a bit like driving a vauxhall viva   them moved on to a 996 c4 for a little while the driving position improved, but it did'nt float my boat !

As for Spike's porker tubbo  there was more than one drip inside

I hate them, and have had good test drives in many non turbo 911's, horrible light front end, miserable delivery of power, and most of them are horrid inside aswell, the one I drove was atleast 75k and it had Mustard leather, bad enough the seats but they decided to clad the dash in it aswell

Go for an M5, I am just back from Skye with mine and I have renamed my M button it is now called " MADNESS " 8) 8)

Makes a WR1 feel like its going backwards, and I am not just saying that.

Spikes 911 had a "I'm an old bird button"... It was called his right foot. Problem with having that sort of car is you need the money along side to enjoy it. Spike drove his like he was scared of breaking it because he couldn't afford to fix it or even put new tyres on it. Shame it only ever saw 30mph and 4krevs. When he took my wife out in his 911 I quote "I nearly fell asleep, what a waste".

Just to fill you in, Spike went from the WR1 to 911 turbo to Evo 9 and now he has.... not telling you. :nono:

Massive different betwen the 996 and 997 turbo IMO. You would have been way more impressed with the latest variant.

As for the current 997 c2s and c4s trhese really are great cars. I would strugle a bit coming out of my car into one power wise, but they are a totally different beast. Not tried the newest 7 speed PDK version, will let you know how good that is next Monday after I've had one for a couple of days. Makes teh 0-60 the same as the GT3 though! 8)

I also wonder how much trying a car like this on a track is part of the problem. When Fraser, Tom and I were out in Dubai with Aston Martin Racing both Fraser and I were given a go in a new DBS around the Dubai Autodrome and we were both underwhelmed by the experience. We both agreed though on the road it would have been an awesome car.

A car will always feel faster on the road than it does on the track IMHO.

I agree with this, my 1 never felt anywhere near as quick on track as it did on a B road bash 8) 8)

I was wondering 997 or a 966 too :?

I guessed 996, because a 997 would feel, and is, miles quicker than a wr1. Itll hit 100 in 8seconds dead, touch 200mph and do 40 to 60 in 1second, yes 1second  These are figures a modded wr1 would have trouble matching, so a stock car would have absolutely no chance.

The difference between 996 and 997 models is vast. A Gen II PDK 997 C2S would be my perfect choice of car. A complete dream to drive and i'd be quite happy with one of these. If i had 100k for a turbo i'd think i'd died and gone to heaven :D...

...or buy an M5

Agreed although when he said 100k I assumed he must have been on about the 997.

How did you find the PDK? I've not tried it yet, but can't wait to get one for the weekend. :D :D :D

TBH you get used to the buttons, but it's just not as natural as a proper paddleshift, the one gripe i had about the car, Porsche really need to change that.

It changes gear so fast now though - and 385bhp through the rear wheels

I've driven a 997 turbo and they are bloody quick, it's just the fact that the power delivery is so smooth and constant that you dont get the almight bang from behind you maybe expect..

997 and 996 are indeed very different as pointed out higher. The 997's interior is quite nice, the 996 can go with a DB7

As for driving, I don't know what kind of 911 you drove bbigman, but the 997 feels very nimble when driving it. This at least goes around a corner in contrary to that heap of metal M-technic calls a sportsaloon.
With all respect, but when I listen at some of the things here, I start to think this is the "BMWM5register" :shake:

I'm with Robin on the experience with the DBS. Very heavy car. Much more of a GT than a sportscar. And as a GT, it's still too heavy.
