Bought a car for my girlfriend today too.
Bit less glamourous than the S, but I quite like it.
Got a 2001 Lexus IS300 with 100K on the clock: Silver metallic, comes with full Lexus Service history, automatic gearbox (with paddles at the steeringwheel), auto aircon, sunroof, black leather, heated and electrical seats, sound system, 6CD changer, parking assyst, etc. All for 3490,-GBP...
Drove the car and first feared a car of that price would be a driving wreck. I was totally stunned. This thing felt fresher than most new cars. Sharp, compact, fast.
Only work needing done is the alloys that are oxidated. The seller will get them doen for 40 quid each though.
I will go and valet the car at his premisses next week and then get it home.

Thanks.
I originally was thinking of an IS200 due to its size/reliability/safety/value ratio. Plus, it does look nice.
The fact I found a 300 for the same money is a bit of a perk of the current climate.

I take it is the SE since it has a auto box. Love the retro fit parking aids
You wait till there is a 2mm of snow on the ground... You better start walking.
I had the IS200 Sport when they first came out. Lovely car for sure. Not fast whatsoever... but lovely to drive. The alloys on them were a common fault.

Yeah, I also thought first it was a 200 when we went to the seller (2 miles down the road actually). Turned out I misread also and is a 300.
The 300 has a 3000cc straight six with 211bhp. The 200 sticks to 2000cc and something like 150 or 155bhp. Correct Stu ?
Still not really fast, but for Marketa, this is a first car and I think this is better than anything she ever wanted.

300 came out slightly later than the 200 in the IS range. Initially it came out in the estate version but it never really took off. I never drove the IS300 but I did buy a GS300 which I assume is the same straight six engine. Both my Lexus' were exceptional for issue free motoring. I once drove my GS300 from Stourbridge to Cardiff to Newcastle and back to Macclesfield in 12 hours. Excellent motorway muncher at the time. I seem to recall blatting down the motorway in the early hours of the morning and there was someone walking down the middle of the slow lane... Thankfully I wasn't driving slowly else I might have hit him!

looks like it has some optional extras. Does that mean you will get some "optional extras" tonight?

These cars come fairly well kitted as standard. When I had one there were three options all with the same 2 litre engine. An S (auto), SE (auto) and a Sport (man). The only things that were missing from the Sport was SatNav as that was an expensive optional extra. If I remember correctly they head auto lights, heated electrical seats but for some reason they didn't have auto windscreen wipers which is something I really like. They seem rather basic given the recent discussions around M5s and S-Class AMGs.

very nice motor that is Swede, I have been considering the IS200 for my missus, a good strong, reliable car.

An SE with the Sport spoiler fitted as an optional extra. Platinum ice paint is the best colour IMHO as it is the only one that works with the Lexus rear lights.... Boy do Lexus have some answering to do with the introduction of Lexus rear lights on to all the chavved up cars.

Thanks for the update. I had no clue !
So were the dark windows standard ?
And is that paint really grey or does it have a hint of beige in it (you know me and colours...)

I believe the SE came with tinted windows.
Owing to stupid standard Sport spoiler lip some people went for an optional upgrade on the Sport for a larger spoiler. What Lexus did was offer the Original sport boot (including spoiler) to an SE customer so they could fit the larger spoiler to a boot without the holes in it left from taking off the standard sport spoiler. Basically the holes were in a different place. The larger spoiler and additional side skirts really completed the look in my opinion. By the time you have finished putting Aboriginal stone artwork into your paintwork it makes the discussion about "completed look" a little pointless.

So how should it look with all those spoilers on ?
I've only seen them like Mak's car. Although I have seen a few GS300's in 'Sport' version which hade skirts etc.
Actually quite like the discreet looks of this one.

I think for 3.5K, this is all it needs to be. It's a simple (hopefully reliable) runabout, nothing else.
But I indeed prefer a girl who doesn't need a flash car to attract attention
