TuningI have driven the cars with 400+ BHP and it stops being a nice driveable beast you start to get hacked off driving round town as your always between gears its also a bit lumpy. On motorways back roads etc a bit of the fun returns but even that is limited now with speed cops and cameras all over the place.
Yeah I think just under 400bhp is the way forward
2004 RB Renault Clio 182 (Coilovers running Mark Fish setup)
Re: Tuning
I'd have to disagree with that. I think it depends on the build and what has been specced in some of the changes, for example some some horrendous clutch options like whatever is fitted for the FQ400 as standard would make a car less driveable. I've been in 400 and 400BHP+ cars that owners say are as drivable as they were as standard. I think with most when you get to that level you're talking major mods/changes though..
TumingI agree with some of what is being said I have driven the FQ400,STi with 420 and a Skyline 440 BHP each of them were a lot harder to drive than the WR1 with 350 ish and as such a lot less fun.
the question now is do you guys that have modified your cars get in a std WR1 and think.... thats well slow...? or is it a case of my modded car is much smoother and a far better drive than this std one...?
The closest I have come to comparing my car is with Pasty... that is only because he took a similar modding route.
I occasionally go in ScoobyDan's "fairly" standard car (no engine mods) and one can't help remembering just how good the standard car is. Having said that, do I wish mine was still standard.... er No thank you. Marky Mark sprinkled magic stardust on our car.
Re: Tuming
in what way were they harder to drive? Clutch/power delivery/handling?
Re: Tuming
Probably the fact you have to learn how to drift On another note are there any WR1 owners in yorkshire with a modified car that would be willing to meet up one weekend so i can see what sort of a beast the car turns into with a few mods? Thanks Mega
Tuningmainly clutch (twin plate) and delivery on a run fine but round town always seemed heavy going
Spoke to Well Lane today and the girl on the phone said that because prodrive have been into the ECU with their prodrive kit that I couldnt get any more power out of the car. I said others have remaps done etc, she said they supply the prodrive kit and thats about it. I said what about induction kits and exhausts... she said no point if we cant remap it. she said the ECU had been "locked" by prodrive... Is she telling porkies or is it a case of they havent the ecutek kit to unlock it properly? Also Spoken to the racing line halifax today, Matt is getting back to me with prices for what he suggested which was: Exhaust Fuel pump Remap oh also he said id need a front mounted intercooler if i was going to track it?!?! He says it should get around 350 with that little lot on it... We will see when he comes back with the costs... I was still hoping to get nearer the 370-380bhp mark as if im spending serious money I want to feel a serious difference not just a slightly smoother ride with better acceleration.. PS where is this magic dust that marky mark throws over your car to make it into a monster? and just how quick is bro's car now after this...
Well lane don't know what they are on about. Of course the ECU can be mapped.
I said "take it to well lane if you want to see 360 BHP" simply because their dyno reads 20 BHP more than any one elses! I was not suggesting having the work done there! There are also a lot of places around that have far more knowledge and a better rep than TRL. No magic dust with Bro's car, just quality parts, and a good mapper. All i did was bolt them on. IIRC it gave 405 BHP and about 390 ft'lb, but it drives very nicely. Last edited by marky mark on Fri Apr 04, 2008 6:02 pm, edited 1 time in total.

Careful what you say mate, im taking you literally here... I take it ya not pulling my leg about the mods too
I don't pull peoples legs when they are talking about modding their pride and joy, although i may do on everything else.
Just edited my above post regarding Bro's car. If JP is Roland Rat, them I am Errol the Hamster... His number 1 fan.
Also your car does not require a fuel pump until over 400 BHP, it already has an uprated item in. Another sign TRL don't know what they are talking about.

Yer okay so the two people ive spoken to today dont know what theyre doing.. doesnt give me too much confidence in using them to mod my pride and joy... what about the front mount intercooler, is that needed for trackdays too?
Also out of curiosity, whats bro had done to get over 400bhp IIRC ?
oh by the way - will remapping + exhaust with resonated centre section make the car pop/bang/flame from teh exhaust as my focus ST does ?
If you are staying in the 350-360 region, the standard intercooler will be fine.
Bro's car is based around a Garett hybrid turbo from RCM. I also fitted an APS front mount, bigger injectors, 3" RCM system, induction kit, 3" Inlet pipe, ceramic coated headers / up pipe, SX fuel reg, different plugs, catch can and a few other bits and bobs to support the turbo and keep it reliable. Mapped by Bob Rawle, just an Ecutek of the standard ECU This will be fine on the road, but it's pushing it a bit if you want to be sure of reliability on track without going into the bottom end. Rods and pistons would be required. Bro understands this, otherwise i would not have built it to this spec. My own car ran very similiar power to this on a standard STi8 bottom end, and i did a few trackdays with no problem whatsoever though. If JP is Roland Rat, them I am Errol the Hamster... Not normally, but if you want it mapped that way you can have it so.... If JP is Roland Rat, them I am Errol the Hamster... His number 1 fan.
Okay cool,
So reading back through this thread, to get my car running at around 360b bhp from standard... with more torque throughout the range and more acceleration without going crazy... keeping it quiet enough for long journeys (inside the cabin)... whilst allowing the car to be used on a track + for it to reliable for daily commute to work... I need the following: 3" Exhaust System: £850 +Vat Such as: CM 3" System With Centre Silencer (RCM348) + fitting kit (is this the full system from teh manifold right through to the back or do i need more bits to complete it?!?) No induction kit Standard is fine? No front mount intercooler Standard is fine? No fuel pump Standard is fine? Turbo Upgrade £how much? Such as: TD05 18G turbo Upgraded Injectors £250 + Vat Such as: Any recommendations? Upgraded Spark Plugs £how much? Such as: Again any ideas? ECU Remap £650 + Vat Such as: ECUTek Remap Via Andy Forrest (if he is nearest to me) Fitting: £540 + Vat Final query is fitting that little lot. Can any engineer do it or should i aim to get it all done under the same roof? RCM quoted me 9hours labour at something like £60+vat an hour Have i missed anything?!?
Re: Tuning
We have had around 350+ bhp for 3years and now over 400bhp and done 24k's and 36k's in total, and still on the standard clutch, so in that respect ours drives as a standard car as you could imagine around town, Although fitting a twin plate would probably alter that 2007 BMW M5

Was going to quote that but you beat me too it 2007 BMW M5

Mega trust me and go for 400bhp, I did the the hard way with
340 first, 355, 380 now 400 do it in one hit it is more expensive I admit but it is far cheaper than doing it 4x do it 2007 BMW M5
2004 Petter Solberg STi
yer but how much are we talking for all parts fitted for 400bhp ?
Gawd knows... I try not to add it up.
I went for handling mods + brakes before engine mods. To be honest if I did it again I would take the same route.
well ive started with the brakes... if these shocks keep going every 6 months or so then i will have to look at coil overs, then maybe serious power upgrades...
thrown the standard shocksa away on mine after failing twice.
i have the type 25 AST setup from Powerstation. others on here have the ExeTC setups. 1mposter is my hero.
