The sports cat was ok when I did the 360 conversion, but tipped over when it went to 400. The gasses were struggling to get through, and this is why the car ran quite poor even to a stage where I could smell the gases inside the car! Once the cat was removed and remapped it was a lot better!

Mark is right in his explanation - one of the articles I came across last weekend on headers and up-pipe wrapping:

How do you know it was OK with 360? How many miles did you do running on this spec?

It certainly seemed quick at the time, and I did not encounter any problems such as smelling the gases in the car and that the car was lively.

With the sports cat on running at 400, bar the smelly  gases the car felt sluggish and I can only think the gases struggling to get out may have been one of the causes of this?

On the mileage front I probably covered about 200 odd miles I would say with the 360 spec before changing to 400.

Mind you all thats said, you do have a valid point in that perhaps 200 miles was not enough to really test it. :)

Yes, I do indeed have a valid point! Most cars I know about that have any power mods have the decat first on the list..

I wonder if the sports cat would have burned out eventually even with the 360?

Probably. Did you get your injectors changed? Also, what clutch are you using ?

Injectors are still the pink originals. Clutch is standard wr1.

No idea on injectors. Clutch is about 4 hours IIRC? I'm suprised your tuner didnt advise on a stronger clutch when speccing the build, particularly given the high torque figures claimed?

No point changing clutch until it gives up.

agree with Bro, it's just one of them things. The only ball ache is if it startys to slip during mapping, then you wish you would have changed it.

I agree too. Just suprised a replacement wasnt recommended to injectors and clutch whilst the build was taking place :?

To be fair, I was told that a possible Clutch would be needed running 400 or more but it would depend on my driving i.e. launches etc. The clutch isn't slipping yet (touch wood) and I don't have much intentions to launch left right and center!

What clutches would you chaps advise? I know some of them can be a lil heavy i.e. not ideal for town driving. Any recommendations?

Dan - with hindsight, I should have checked with you chaps before commencing on the project but thanks man for pointing out these things. :thumb:

No launches? I thought you were a bit of a fan of the drag strip ?!

some have the AP organic, which is what I did originally spec for mine, heard good things about it for your target power, otherwise twin plate if you're likely to do more in the future? The Exedy I have I'm very happy with. Not cheap though!

what i'd intended to be a simpe thread has certainly created a bit of debate!

My P1 has big turbo, 2.5, injectors etc, and i dont really want to go that route with the WR1. - just looking for some 'simple' mods to get to around 360 - still not sure from the responses so far if this is possible.
Have also been considering changing the car for M5 or RB320, or similar, although am thinking 'simple' mods might be enough to put sparkle back into it.
Cheers.

Decat and Remap I think should see you around 350-360 ish. Have you spoken to Bob Rawle?

Yes it possible , but only just ...
Allowing a room for error I would say that 330-350bhp is more likely the figure that you will see on a Dyno Dynamics dyno...
The problem above this is that on pump fuel only the VF35 turbo fitted to your car will struggle to produce over 350bhp..
Decat , headers , RCM induction kit and remap would be my choice of package for this level...

The question I would also be asking is what Torque figures would give you with these so called "simple" mods?

i know, torque is far more important. - the P1 puts out about 420 torque and pulls like a train, however, with the WR1 i'd be happy keeping it at about the 350/360 level.

ok, have also spoken with my god friend Duncan who runs Hypertech in Falkirk, Scotland (highly recommended!!!) and it looks like the undernoted are potentially on the cards;

Turbo up pipe
H&S decat to complement my existing H&S centre pipe
replacement panel filter and resonator/filter box mods
pipe wrapping
AF remap

Will retain existing backbox and main cat.

What do you reckon?? - expected power/torque? - will get it dyon'd on Duncans' dyno after mods in place.

Cheers

With the cat in place I don't see you going beyond 350 easily.

350/360 lb of torque  - what just from the above mods?

Errr I don't think so fella - but than again I am not an expert but just going by from experience and what I have read up.

I'd say with the above mods you'd probably achieve 320-325 lb ish (may be lower even!) on a good set of rollers.

I would perhaps get a couple of more opinions from other tuning firms/mappers, and that is not disrespect to your god friend. :thumb:

Would be good to see Marky Mark's reponse on this.

given these cars are 320bhp std then i'd have thought +30 from these mods (and of course a staple diet of vpower) might be reasonable to expect???

Mate don't get your BHP and Torque confused. I was on about you getting 350/360 lbs of torque just from the above recommendation you were told in terms of mods. Perhaps I got the wrong end of the stick - oif so apologies.

Also you will find that not all standard wr1s are running the factory 315 bhp as i found out on mine. Some may be over :P and some under! :(

If you can get the 350/360 lb with just the above mods on a DD rollers than I will be asking for a refund on mine!

Hi JP,
I always thought the WR1 was 320 bhp std??? - incidentally what did yours make on the DD as a std car?

Hi mate - Subaru quote them as 315bhp factory standard. However, from what I have seen and heard, they all make different power - most are fairly close in terms of torellance. However, a few exceptionals make over 320bhp and on the other hand go the other way :( ...a little like mine!

First time I put mine on a Dyno Dynamics rollers it showed less than 300 bhp but had bad boosting problems. Best thing is for you to get yours on a decent rollers and see what it is running now before considering any mods (in my opinion). :thumb:

320 PS IIRC, which converts to about 315.616 BHP. Roughly.
