tileys

Postby p060064h » Thu Jan 31, 2008 5:19 pm

hi every one i have been recomended to go to tileys of bristol to mod my 1, i have about 5k and want over 400bhp and on ringing round different places to see what they can do, power station said that tileys were lieing about the bhp figures i would get with there mods. having spoke to dave at tileys who seems a very nice bloke by the way, it has put me off a little which is a shame because i was going to get the work done there.

well anyway has anyone got any view's on this :?:

also can you get over 400 safe bhp for 5k :?:

thanks in advance

I don't think you'll get much over 400bhp for £5K, if you've got a standard car now. You wouldn't want to push much more than 400bhp on the standard internals and you're looking at £3K for a forged build from a company like API (expensive but good reputation).

And then there's the brakes to think about. Your looking at uprated pads and discs all around, or AP 6-pots @ £1,700.

A quick sum on parts:

MD321H or MD321T turbo - £1500
Headers - £500
3" full exhaust system £700
650cc Injectors £260
FMIC - £1100
Induction £250
Remap £650
Plugs - £40
Uprated Clutch inc fitting £700

£5,700

Options

Uprated pads and discs all around £700
AP 6-pots £1700
Engine rebuild £3K
Whiteline Anti-roll bars and ALK to help put power down £550

I think 5K is a bit on the optimistic side to be honest.

Engine: FMIC with K&N CAIK, Oil Catch Can & MD321H turbo. Next mod: TBD
Brakes: Turbo Groove Discs, Pagid RS29's & Braided Hoses.
Suspension: Whiteline front and rear ARB's, ALK

Thats a bit unproffesional of Powerstation.

Can you put a list up of all the stuff Tilleys want to fit, most importantly the turbo spec?

They normally use parts/turbo's from RCM - so it's all quality gear that works well together.

5K for 400 BHP is possible, but it would porobably cost a bit more if you wanted it 100% reliable.

You can run a reliable 400 bhp on a standard bottom end, but if you plan on doing a lot of track work or you drive like a complete idiot on the road i would not advise it.

Here's a couple of pics. of the car Dave built from scratch for the owner of Tiley's.
As Mark says they use RCM for parts and Tiley's being a Subaru main dealer you get good backup.

This car is running around 550bhp and is only used as a track toy.

you get what you pay for, ultimately all their stuff comes from RCM, not the cheapest, but arguably one of the best. Dave has done all the work on my car, and I cant recommend him highly enough, others will back this up too. Yes, you can save a bit of money and do it somewhere else slightly cheaper probably, but would the job be as good? would it be as reliable? probably not.

Dont just base your decision on price, look closely at the specs, and the references people can provide on the tuners.

p.s any tuner that says another is shit, or lying, deserves shooting IMHO. Unless of course they have a specifically good reason for these comments. I spoke to Dave earlier and he mentioned another tuner and said he would never slag them off, however talked through the way they do things differently.

If you're aiming for 400 BHP, and you are spending £5k, a lot of money, do it properly

Can you define 'drive like a complete idiot on the road' ?

Do you mean bouncing engine off the rev limiter, or what? I like driving hard down country lanes - does that mean my engine won't cope?

Cheers

I only use Alan & Martyn at www.enginetuner.co.uk for all my work.

Currently running 420/350 on standard sti8 uk.

Phone Martyn and have a chat about the JD400 package.

Mine had it's mods done by Dave at Tiley Developments. Many of you know of "bob" who owned 6 scoobies before selling his 6th one to me. He's had Tiley's do MANY pounds worth of work for him and Dave really knows his stuff. Yep, they use Roger Clark Motorsport (RCMS) equipment, ie headers, full 3" system, decatted matched up to RCMS Induction kit. They also married up a nice Forge dump valve for Bob and the car then went to ENGINE TUNER for the remap to gain 40bhp when put on the rollers. That's with NO increase in boost as Bob wanted the sound, the performance and a built in safety factor...........GO TO TILEY'S !!!!!!!!!!

We have both made mistakes wih regards to tuners in the past (everyone knows who we mean) and I cannot fault Alan & Martyn for their helpful, proffessional attitude and do not have any problems with them working on my car!!!!

And remember, you dont have a WR1 either

Sorry Jd. I meant to say that Bob took the car to enginetuner for the remap. I made it sound as if Tiley's drove it down there!

Tiley's do not map cars themselves. They normally use Bob Rawle, but in this instance Bob chose to use Martyn at AJ's.

yes martin i did use another company a couple of times, they were new and the owner was a good salesman, shame about the mechanic!!!!

The work was satisfactory until I got them to undertake more than fitting a top mount intercooler.

but as you have never used AJ how can you slag them off as you have no personal experience of them? Sounds like you are just making public personal attacks against Alan & Martyn from "something i heard in the pub".

just feel you comment of "you have a WR1, not a wheel barrow" is over the top and a blatent attack on Alan & Martyn when you have no personal experience.
