Mods for Stock WR1

Postby Scutch » Fri Jan 18, 2008 3:12 pm

Hopefully will be purchasing a pretty standard WR1. Yes, how God and Subaru intended. However, I dont usually leave things for very long - look at my P1. Its all subtle, of course, but I'm a bit of a sucker for power and noise, too.

As the exterior is pretty much how I'd like it, neglecting the WR1 badge on the rear which I'd like, ditching the other badges.
I was thinking of a Blitz system for the noise. Been speaking to Mike and a few others and some have recommended the 2.5" backbox, others the 3" system. Hmm, bit confused as to which is best. I'm presuming the stock system is 2.5" through from the downpipe? So if I do opt for the 3" system including decat I'd no doubt need it remapped. However, if I go for the 2.5" backbox and centre section I wouldnt need a remap. Correct?

Induction kit. Which is the best induction kit to go for? This is where I know I'll need a remap, and have already contacted Andy Forrest for his opinion (he mapped the P1).

Hmm, well thats about it, guys. True, not a lot. Exhaust and Induction kit, but I'd love your opinions and recommendations.

Oh, and like I said, I'll be hopefully getting some Defi's and a pod sorted out. What are the opinions on the Whiteline ARB's? They are apparently one of the best mods to add on the P1, but I never got round to it.

What say you?

Thanks peeps :)

All the same stuff that works on the P1, will also do so on a WR1. The engines are still basically the same. ECU's are a lot better and quicker acting so will be safer.

Thanks Mark! 8)

Great stuff. So, in theory, its a lot safer car, engine wise than the P1? Not as many rebuilds? ;)

Mark is the man when it comes to tinkering! My love for our WR1 never faded.... but after a little spanner work from Mark the love increased ten fold.

So would you guys recommend a 3" system if I was to go for the remap? Or stick with 2.5" all the way through?

I'm also a bit wary about the noise levels from the Blitz. I'd like a loud exhaust, but not one that will make my ears bleed.

Opinions?

The base engine is a far better starting point than a p1 Scutch, They don't suffer the same big end problems - Big ends are as better material and the oil system is improved.

The pistons are a similiar strength, but the ECU's are far quicker reacting than the P1 item. If it does detect any knock it stands a far better chance of pulling ignition in time before meltdown. Bro will confirm this, He saw it himself during mapping with me driving. We had a flash of det, i backed off and then floored it again immediately and Bob said it took 1.8 degrees out straight away.

As a stage one upgrade, i would not bother with an induction kit (unless you like the noise) as the benefits are not great at this level. The standard airbox is more than man enough.

I would always go for a 3" system. They don't cost a great deal more and if you plan on going further then you may regret it. The Blitz NUR spec has a 2 1/2" end to the centre pipe, so if you want a full 3" system you have to modify it.

I did this on Bro's at his request, and the noise was offensive. Even he got fed up after a couple of weeks, it really was OTT. We put a full 3" RCM system on then and it sounds beautiful.

Bob Rawle has also said to me every car he has mapped with a blitz on never felt quite right, almost as though it held them back a bit. Bro will also tell you his blitz used to tarnish the paintwork above the exhaust exit.

The APS systems are quality kit, but 3 1/2" is huge and they are expensive. It won't cause any harm but 3" will see you over 600 BHP if you wish to take it that far.

Thanks for that information Mark. Spot on! :)

I do like the RCM jobbies, but they do seem VERY expensive. Could I maybe get a H&S decat downpipe and then go 3" RCM from there? I would actually prefer the RCM but it was just the cost that was getting to me when I looked on the website.

Would you say its a similar sound to that of an Afterburner, or much better/more distinctive?

Cheers mate :)

You get what you pay for, I've got the RCM 3in all the way through on my 2.5 STi and love the sound, also you cant fault the service. I had a gasket rattle twice and jokingly asked for the whole system to be replaced and it was, no questions asked 8)

The criteria is simple : Noise! But not so much as to make my ears pop, or bleed. Loud is good, but like Mark said. offensive is not good!

Has anyone got any sound clips of theirs in action? (exhausts that is...!)

I dont really want to pay £800+ for an exhaust system, so wouldnt mind cutting it down like I mentioned above with the Hayward and Scott down to an RCM. Just dont know if thats possible. I realise RCM are grade A.

I'll probably end up just going for the RCM, but I'll be short of ye old cash.

Guess it depends on difference in price between RCM and A-nother option  I'd imagine the difference in the long run is minimal. IMHO the RCM System sound f*cking awesome on the 2.0 and 2.5. no sound clips i'm afraid

Decat Blitz is lovely.... The problem is the people around you....

The other problem is the noise is worse in the back of the car. Always sit in the back if you have a child and see what it sounds like after an hour. If it hurts your ears you will be setting you child up for ear problems for sure. We were happy with a cat+Blitz. We wouldn't even let our boy look at our car with a decat+Blitz. Don't get me wrong..... it was the sweetest sound..... but the Police road blokes were always waiting for you... that could feel you coming before they could hear you! But what a soundtrack.

General consensus : The RCM 3" system sounds great? Its louder than the standard system and looks well?

  errrrr... i'm not sure those parts will make you look like a coloured gentleman in DAZ white grundies doing a silly dance....

But those are the bits you want. You can have the silenced centre section if you prefer as well. The fitting kit is comprehensive to say the least. If you knacker every one of the nuts and bolts when changing it all you might use it all but otherwise you won't.

If you are getting it fitted by someone who has a few nuts and bolts lying around, you might be better just buying the gaskets.

Which induction kit would you guys recommend? I realise the standard airbox is suitable and capable of up to 350bhp, but I'm a noise whore.

Also, the induction kit on the P1 gave off a nice array of noises when backing off the throttle, like a fluttery chatter noise. Is this the same on the WR1?

Ta.

Whiteline stuff is great for the handling. It can make the odd knocking noise on slow manovers.

RCM induction kit looks cool. Some people prefer the CAIK.
