Suspension squatting like a Frenchman going for a dump!

Postby WR1 Bro » Thu Dec 20, 2007 9:36 am

Last night whilst playing and still getting used to the car I noticed how much the rear of the car squats under hard acceleration. When on the motorway I can see the headlights of the cars behind me in the rear-view mirror, also known as a make-up mirror. However, under acceleration the rear dips and the headlights from behind are obscured by the spoiler. Without any accurate means of measuring this I'm guessing the rear of the car is dipping by at least 2 inches (it could be more, it could be less). In turn one guesses that this is lifting the front by some amount too?

This reminded me of a conversation I had with Pasty when he was relaying some information from RCM. There advice was to set the rear suspension firmer than the front to maintain a more composed car under acceleration.

With this information and my observation I see no alternative but to invest in Exe-tc suspension for safety reasons... Safety as in.... a better controlled car surely must be safer.

Will this discussion work on the wife???

Marginally, but i think he already has one.

The real answer is the car needs detuning!

ALK already fitted.

I would have thought that the ALK would minimise the front from lifting but would have little impact on the rear dipping?

maybe it is the weight of the driver being forced backward under acceleration?

i would be wary of stiffening the rear of the car, could make corners interesting.

People said that about the ARBs... "Don't put them on the stiffest setting as the back end will be stepping out all the time"... I've never taken it off the stiffest setting since trying it as I prefer it.

I wish I could try the car in standard form again to see if it squats the same. I can't remember really noticing.

Yes.

The suspension was recently replaced (less than 4k miles ago) under warranty and now they are banging and clanging worse than ever.

by all accounts the exe-tc is a good setup, and worth the investment. Do it !

I would like to try both the ASTs and the Exe-tc. I'm favouring the Exe-tc at the moment.

Can you not just remove the rear spoiler  problem solved.

Nah, serious though, Huss has that Tien suspension on his evo  In car adjustable too so may be worth a look. His seems to sit perfectly level and has many, many horsepowers and torques!!

The reason I have excluded Tein is that everyone I respect suggests it is very hard and makes the driving experience very bumpy?

Depends on the settings you use I guess.

On rock hard its rock hard.

Set it softer and its softer.

Im sure theyre all very good, although frasers T25 on the ASTs wasnt that hot a donnington, think he had set up issues though, and the evo on its standard bilsteins was far cleverer through the corners and under hard acceleration and deceleration.

You pays your money, you make your choice.

I'm told the soft Tein setup is very harsh. Unfortunately I don't think it is possible to compare a setup on a different make and model of car.

Still waiting for Bilstein to come up with something for the Impreza.

Afterall Prodrive used it on the RB320, but no aftermarket fitting listed; only Legacy.

Could be a less hardcore alternative to coil-overs.

The type RA-R may be on Bilsteins, but not 100% sure.

I believe the RA-R uses Jap spec subaru suspension and some of that funky pink stuff like Chris B has. but maybe wrong

Speaking from personal experience of Teins, even on the softest EDFC settings you will be quicker on anything other than a very smooth road withe the prodrive set up. This was the case on my P1.

I had them on for a couple of months before i could stad no more. If you have Heather and Otis in they will like it even less and be forever asking you to stop so they can have a wee wee break.

Have not been in anything with the AST's but the EXE-TC stuff i have tried in a couple of cars was a far better set up than Teins

Bro it was'nt RCM who gave the info it was Graham the owner
from exe-tc.

His reasons why to having the rear slightly harder is to stop rear squat, which when this happens causes the front to lift, ie if you going into a corner braking then accelerate the rear will squat and the front will lift which inturn will lose traction enhancing understeer, if the rear does not squat as much the front will then have more of a weight bias to help reduce lose of traction.   or sommit like that.

Of course you can set it how you like to see which is better suited to your driving style

If you consider his quality of the exe-tc profile, supplier to the Citreon WRC, consecutive WRC winners for 4 years, plus daily/weekly feedback with Loeb. Prodrive used them when they were winning, can't think for whatever reason why SWRT stopped using a proven product. They also suply other motorsport team in different types of racing.

It is a lot dearer than ast, but either way there better than the present set-up

I'm sure the AST's would have been OK if Powerstation hadn't been too busy to help. However my lack of knowledge also compounded the problem by getting the settings completely wrong! Nevertheless, having been out with an exe-tc set-up they very definitely get my vote :thumb:
