FRONT FOGS FOR WR1

Postby thegunners » Thu Nov 29, 2007 8:14 pm

Hi fellas,

need to replace front fogs as bith have shipped water and died. Subaru UK are trying to charge me ?350 plus vat!!!!!!!! cos alledgedly they are smaller than standard STI ones so obviously are EXTRAORDINARILY expensive.

Is there an aftermarket lamp thats cheaper or what has everyone else done with these. They do appear to be in the perfect place to break after every stone chip :)

I guess it could just be thats what they cost then

Chars for now

Iain

Hi Iain

I have a pair of the original PIAA driving lamps, they come with the leads and the backing plate, bolts etc. I bought them when I had my WR1 just in case I needed a replacement! I have since sold the car. I was going to advertise on here but had not got round to it, I'm looking for around £150 + delivery for the pair.

There is a thread somewhere with the full list of part codes. I say this as two out of three dealers quoted me for the wrong replacement item.

Hi, whilst you're talking about fog lights, are the original one's fitted to wr1's fog lights, or driving lights? as my ones are the piaa's wired up to come on as a main beam, i always thought they were fog lamps as with all my previous wrx's and sti's, is this correct or has someone changed mine at some point?

WRX has fog lights that you can put on and off so long as you have you side lights on.

WR1 driving lights only come on with main beam.

And if I remember rightly there is a button next to the intercooler water spray button which means you can choose whether or not the driving light come on with the main beam

Correct Robin.

A button with a stupid sticker which I can only assume goes over the top of a fog light picture?

Aye they're drivers lights not fogs, i always have mine switched on so they come on when i go to main beam. Good thing is you never get stopped by police for having them on as when your in town they're not on, i always used to get a lot of hassle from police in my old wrx forgetting to switch them of in town, even got threatened with court once by a particularly grumpy copper!!!

Mine are fine with no chips in them & thats with about 90% of the roads up here covered in the all weather chippings.

Think of them as spot lights, they have a narrower beam than a fog lights, better suited when on main beam,

Fog lights, funny enough used in fog and have a wider spread of light.

You should never have you lights on main beam with oncoming traffic

Well done Wayne glad somebody sorted out the Ferret's woes, to be honest i think you gave us all an education there :toofunny:

Hi Foley, do you have the correct colour covers over your driving lamps then?
I thought the WR1 came without them and the PIAA lights were in place...

I only ask as I remember a thred saying there must be 500 ice blue light covers lost in prodrive somewhere as no one got them with the car....

I'd love to know if they are avaiable somewhere.....[/list]

When I came back and read the replies to my post, I was still none the more wiser, so a bit of googling and I found this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Driving_lights

"Therefore, they are only suitable for use when alone on the road, as the glare they produce will dazzle other drivers."

"They are most notably fitted on rallying cars, and are occasionally fitted to production vehicles derived from or imitating such cars."

RIGHT! That's cleared that one up, we have almost pointless driving lights being in the UK and almost certain to not be alone on the roads to use them! I'm thinking, I would have rather liked to had fog lights.

Neither a less they still look cool 8)

Ferret i think your missing the point of them. They have plenty of use on the road, you use full beam when your driving with nothing coming towards you then flick to dipped beam when a car comes then back to full once its passed don't you? Well think of driving lamps as extra set of full beam lights so when your driving they boost the light cast on the road letting you see clearer then they switch of when you switch to dipped so as not to dazzle the oncoming traffic. Not much use if your a towny but if you drive on dark country roads they help.

No, I've actually never used full beam bar the odd occasion like the one time I went to Norfolk to Courtenay Sport where it was necessary down the dark country road. So I see your point and I suppose they are useful

But you’re right I am town/motorway driver and therefore mostly driving on lit roads, so not much use to me personally. But now I have been educated on the uses of them, I will endeavour to find opportunities to use them lol

That's cool Foley, I've never see the WR1 with the covers on...
I might even start a new thread to see if anyone knows where the ones are which should have come with the car... I guess the only other option is to buy some have them colour matched and then add the STI decals...

Cheers for the pic! Looks nice dude.

The covers always came with the Petter Solberg edition in Continental Europe.

Always wondered: Do they actually fit over the driving lights, i.e. can you use them as protection for the lights.

Yes you can.

A few people on here have had the covers. I seem to think Ant had them... Maybe Bigman will confirm.

You can change the driving lights to fog lights and get the switch to work as per the normal STI, by unjoining the wire that prodrive fitted, pretty certain all the used is a block joiner in the loom by the fuses.
