Upgrading Head Unit

Hi guy's, need some advise!

I'm thinking of getting a Kenwood DDX-7029 double DIN multimedia head unit for my 1, and was wandering if anyone has already installed one? And if so, have you gone for the reversing camera option? Is it any good?

Is it difficult to install a new head unit? DIY job? Also, what kind of connection does the OEM unit have, will I need an adaptor?

If anybody can reccommend an alternative head unit for me, please let me know!

Many thanks

Mark

Changing the head unit is pretty straight forward. You will need an adapter lead. Autoleads PC2-44-4.

Open the cup holder, remove the two screws and wriggle the cup holder out. Then you can prise off the head unit surround in an anti-clockwise direction. This come off complete with heating controls, so just lean it against the gear lever.
The head unit is held in by six screws. Just pull out head unit disconnect the earth, multi-pin plug and ariel lead.
The metal brackets on the side of the head unit are then transfered to the new unit. The adapter leads inserted between the original loom and new head unit and you will most likely need an ariel adapter as well. There will probably be a couple of other wires that will need connecting also.

When clipping the facia back into place put the cup holder back in before finally pushing the top of the facia completely home.

If you are upgrading your head unit I would recommend you at least change the front door speakers as the originals are pretty dire.

Scoobynet's ICE section has lots of helpfull information.. :)

From what I have seen, removing cup holder makes it easier to flip out the facia...
