Decat on WR1

Postby Anders_WR1 » Fri Sep 23, 2005 6:36 pm

Hello all, I've just joined this forumn (WR1 236).

I've been wanting to decat for a while now, to let a few more of the muted pops and bangs through I hear on over-run.

I've searched this forumn and Scoobynet and have come to the conclusion that a full decat is not for me, but a centre decat sounds a good comprimise on increasing noise, without loosing any performance or causing engine reliability issues.

What centre decat pipe will fit? Scoobyworld do a Afterburner cat pipe which I think is manufacturerd by Hayward and Scott. Will this do the job? Anyone fitted the centre pipe that bins the resonator?

Cheers

Anders

I read a couple of posts on Scoobynet and they recon centre decat is already fitted with the PPP. Think I will try replacing the resonator section to see if that helps.

Don't want to change the bb, I like the sound.

Cheers

Anders

BTW I plan to fit Whiteline front and rear ARB's and ALK next month with Powerstation geometry setup. Any of you done the same?

Yes, yesterday...... I like the results. Need to test a little more over the next few days.

I also had the brake hoses braided.... Excellent improvement for the extra money.

Which ARB's have you fitted, 22mm adjustable?

What tyres are you running? Mine have about 1K left and while I'm fairly happy with the P Zero's, as they say 'the grass is greener', so I was thinking of trying the Michelin Pilot Sport 2's. I've read quite a few positive comments on these.

Whiteline 22m adjustable.... Yes.

Tyres.... I have Goodyear Eagle F1s. Better than the original tyres by a long way in the wet and dry. Pilot Sports would have been my second choice. Other people like the Toyos.

Keep us all posted on how the Whiteline kit performs. Did you fit front and rear ARB's, or only rear?

Have you tried the Tesco 99RON stuff yet? I've been running Tesco for a month now and I'm convinced it's better. Its got 5% bio-ethanol blended in. I'm sure that's a good thing, but I'm no chemist!

WR1 decat

Postby Mike Wood » Tue Oct 04, 2005 11:43 am

Anders

As STD a WR1 is effectively decatted from a performance perspective anyway. There is no centre cat there at all and the cat in the new downpipe flows at least twice as much as a 3" decat pipe would so there's no restriction.

In our experience, cars fitted with a replacement centre pipe (basically the only original part of the exhaust nor replaced to make the car into a WR1 in the first place) are the ones that show the lowest figures on a dyno and don't drive as nicely as unmolested examples. Basically the car is louder, but slower.

Cheers for the advice Mike. Wasn't planning on taking out your Cat. I read one of your previous posts on SN, where you explained the gas-flowing surface area of your Cat is larger than a standard 3" De-cat downpipe.

Surprised to hear taking out the resonator section would loose performance, but I'm not going to argue. Looks like the standard pipe will stay!

Have you done any tests on the Tesco 99RON fuel yet? I'm sure the car pulls better on this stuff. Turbo seems to pull 1.41 Bar now, whereas Optimax managed 1.4. Not sure if it's the petrol, or the cooler weather.

On another note, have you made any progress trying to sqeeze more power out of the VF35? Or perhaps if that's a dead stick Prodrive will release a performance pack that includes a better turbo? Looking forward to the upgrade, what ever form it takes!
