Wheel Refurb...

Postby CheekyChops » Wed Jun 15, 2011 4:43 pm

Had my WR1 #124 for 8 days and hit a rock on a country lane this afternoon, ripped through the tyre wall and buckled the rim quite badly, although none of the wheel came off, so i'm ever so slightly annoyed.

There is minor bubbling on the other 3 wheels. I'm tempted to get the whole lot re-done. A company in Swindon (quite local to me) has quoted me £280 (special offer) for wheels and tyres off, powder coated in 'gunmetal' and tyres back on, all in one day, +35 for the buckled wheel to be repaired.

Has anyone had theirs done? and is there any advice? The previous owner said the standard pff7's were hard to get re painted, but I can't see any reason why they'd be harder than any others? :x

Ouch! I know how you feel, I got my wheels refurbed only to kerb one a few weeks later :( Cant see why they are keen to powder coat rather than paint? Maybe it's something they can do cheaper or something?

1 day sounds too quick to strip and respray them.I was quoted 3 days for them to be acid dipped/sand blasted (1 day alone) then repaired (kerbing) then sprayed. Tyres back on. The price was £70 a rim.
There is no reason why these are hard to work on. :?

Powder coating is far better than repainting, had our repainted by pristine wheels in Milton Keynes, supposedly one of the best in the country wheels were diffrent shades, also laquar peel off after 3/4 weeks ! :?

Powder coating is a lot harder finish, had our done for £200 + £50 to refit balance tyres far better finish aswell !

Damn it! I'll ask the shop which is the best finish! I'm hearing mixed reviews on both. :?

With powder coating the people who did ours dipped them in acid so they were down to bare alloy, if any further treatment required like kerbed edges or pitting which needed to be addressed was done, fully prepped powder coated and laquered inside aswell !

As far as I could tell on repainting all they did was a light scotch on the existing paint, repaired kerb edges, then a quick blast over and then laquered to the extent they did'nt laquar the inside of the wheel so it was base paint only, like I said pristine wheels not recommended, but not saying who your using is the same quality !

It's true that Powder coating is a tougher finish than paint (I've had mine Powder coated) so it won't chip as easily, however if done properly then there should be no issues by painting either.

You'll be fine with Lepsons though mate, one of the best in the UK when it comes to wheel refinishing, personally I'd have avoided the other place that quoted 1 day to do all the work, that's too quick IMO.

No issues with refurbing PFF7's, I know the 22B wheels can't be Powder Coated as they're magnesium.

Wheel Refurb complete....

Postby CheekyChops » Thu Jul 28, 2011 9:21 am

Ok, so went to Lepsons Swindon and had the wheels refurbed. Due to staffing issues they took 7 days to complete the work instead of 3 and didn't tell me until day 3 when I was leaving to go and collect. Having just finished a night shift I was none too happy....

Apart from iffy customer service they would appear to have done a very good job. It's always reassuring to see many other fine motors up there being pampered too...

So in all 1 new tyre, 1 wheel straightened and 4 wheels refurbed to original colour and finish was £450.

Lucky you got off with changing just one tyre. I went into a pothole rupturing the wall of my n/s/f tyre and due to the tread depths tolerances I had to renew all 4 :crying:

I'd go for powder coating every time. It's more durable and a harder finish that's more resistant to sctratching from cleaning and stuff. Mine were painted before I had them refurbed, and the paint had covered up all the lovely embossed writing on the rims. Now they look as good as new. They were acid dipped, blasted, two powder coats and a powder coat lacquer, then new valves fitted, tyres back on, balanced and back on the car by 5pm, with a 12 month guarantee. Shouldn't be a problem getting them done in a day.

They're the guys that did mine. Feckin brilliant service. They've done three cars for us now. Never had a problem and the finish is better than new.

Are most people sticking to original colour wheels? or do you take the opportunity to change colour?

I was wanting mine to be near as damn it too original but the wally that done them done them slightly darker(doesn't look that bad in the pic) If anything I prefer them lighter.
