Can you explain this for the simple people please?
Ok I will try and make sense of it but I have been confused a few times myself.

Having been in the engine tuning business for years now and watching other tuners uping the bar year on year, you also get to see what they do and what they use. I see one guy gets 500bhp on a 6k motor and another gets the same but spends double! so you ask why and do some R@D yourself based on what you have learnt over the years and use it on a guinea pig (Rocko...but he dosen't know) and observe the results. Thats the back to school bit.

The money saving part from what I have experienced over the past 5 years is the cylinder head work that some say you must have. 3 years ago I did a V5 Impreza engine and used standard off the shelf heads and cams but change the exhaust valves to Supertech for reliability reasons. Fitted with an RCM 500 it went on to do 490 or so bhp. A year later and the same heads but a 2.1 with a GT30 did 530bhp. The point is that I did not need to spend 2k plus on serious head work to achieve this. All this in mind, I knew that Rocko's 2.1 would do the same at least on the newer GT turbos without any major head work but I did not think for a second that the heads would flow enought air to break the 600 barrier without porting, cams or oversize valves.

Hope that does it

Just to let ppl know on why ime doing this .. As ive had a few Emails and texts ...

Askin WHY and What happend

Text below from Engine specialists

I will answer this one because it is my fault. When I was asked back last year to build a 500bhp engine for Rocko, I said easy and I will give you 550bhp without spending lots of ££'s on exotic engine parts and crazy cylinder head work. I have already built many V5 sti and P1's with standard heads and achieved 490 or so bhp in 2.0 form so the idea was 2.1 and AVC heads but not Uk small port heads. I decided JDM as they have more valve lift than the UK ones. In the build I used the Manley H beam rod which I have used in 80% of my 400-550 builds and work very well so armed with this knowledge I proceeded to build as promised.....a reliable inexpensive 550bhp engine...simples.
Trouble was, the first GT30 turbo ran out of puff at 480bhp so we had to add some brew to the fuel and add a few more deg ignition to get 501bhp but still no where near the 550 I promised Rocko. If you read the past post regarding Dave Rowe and the 2 mapping sessions at Zen and DSA then It is clear back then that this new project was imminent. The GT35 instantly pushed it to over my agreed 550bhp but on the day I said lets keep going and see where the line is..we never got there because I said enough as I did not want to keep going to 650 and throw a rod or two across the dyno bay.
I knew from day one that Rocko was going to do a few track sessions and he is not a granny driver either so 550 and Manley rods were fine for this. Now we are over 600 and the same rules so I am not happy to push these rods do over 650 and risk total destruction, all very simple.
Over these past months more people want 600, some just for road and some for track/road so I draw the line on 600 for road with Manley rods and 550 for them when being a track car. A customer came along and wanted a road 600 bhp engine for his P1 and at the same time, Rocko and I had decided to go for over 650 if he can sell his engine to fund the new engine and it's upgrade. Keith from Scooby Projects had a victim who recently had a ride in Rocko's WR1 to get an idea of how it will be in his P1....I do not need to answer what was said...So here we are today, Rocko's 615bhp engine sold to the P1 customer and I have the new engine partly built in my workshop and the only specification change to the bottom end are the new Arrow rods fresh from RCM and all nicely balanced along with the Mahle 2618 pistons and nitrided 79mm crankshaft.

The head gaskets are going to be the weak link but the heads are being pulled down with 14/14mm studs and stopper .60mm gaskets, Just for the record, I know a 2.1 ACV using all these same parts and with Cosworth cams and Supertech valve train ( we will need the same for some extra rpm) has just done 648bhp on head gaskets and pump fuel, this is a full track car and the line was drawn at 2.4 bar, ours is a road and some track so we will max it out and then bring it back to say 666bhp...This is all just a technical exercise and more important, we are going to have some fun doing it thanks to Rocko and all involved.

I know that since I have done this build for Rocko it has created a lot of talk and raised many questions, most have been good but the jungle drums do keep going and now everybody is going back for more...do they all have the same questions...Why was it not built to handle more?

Thats it and as you can all see it is just all a matter of timing and opportunity plus Rocko has said I want the max from the GT35 (me too) so I need to build the new engine to take the expected 2.5+bar and stay together

What a good read.
Cheers Rocko. It really helps to understand the relationship you have with your engine builder.

Good job you weren't doing an engine build and promising exact BHP for a certain other person otherwise you'd have the solicitors round and a bit of Jackie Chan to contend with

I'm not sure how many know this but Rocko's WR1 will be featured in next months Redline magazine and possibly on the front cover. This will be an interesting read and well worth a pre-order from your newsagents

Of course, while this has been going on, we have been busy creating the new and improved model for demonstration purposes and hope to have the results in time for maybe a new feature by the years end. This means John the P1 owner may have Rocko's engine in his car by the end of August 8)
