Twin Turbo?

OK, so the 1 is getting a bit of an overhaul...admittedly a gradual process of building up a garage of parts bit by bit and building a new engine before the open heart surgery commences.

However after chewing over a few ideas, and knowing this will require a complete strip down, probably back to near bare shell I got thinking of new ideas rather just the age old built engine with monster flow turbo.

How about a twin turbo set up?

Essentially the flat 4 is just a 180 degree V engine..so why not slap a smaller turbo onto each end, and treat them individually?

Could use nice symmetrical pipework with twin inter-coolers up front then twin pipes spitting out the back - or even combine into one to help with the exhaust pulses. It would mean a lot of the guff would need to be relocated and/or slimmed down, but that's not impossible to do.

What do you guys think? Stick with a good traditional stroker kit build with single pump and FMIC or the twin set up?

Twin turbo without a doubt. I know some people have done it on the Evo. If you can manage it then it would be very interesting to see how you get on. When I can book my car in with you?

Sounds like an idea, although I am unsure what the objective is. You won't get more bhp than with a bigger turbo and internals done.

I think that would be a great project Andy. Are you planning to have 1 turbo per bank of 2?

Wouldn't this just give power over a smaller rev range than if you had a smaller turbo with bigger turbo kicking in to give more over a wider range?

They have a twin turbo setup on the legacy don't they?

Would be interesting to see if you could do it, certainly a bit different from the usual mods

Sounds like a plan. first wr1 with 2 turbos I've heard of 8)

What about bi- charging it? Super charger to start you of so zero lag then a big single turbo to take over once its further up the revs & boost has been built up in it.
Then you have a big boost car that has zero lag from idle to redline 8)

or a quad turbocharger / quad supercharger and mount the engine in the mid/rear?

You are a silly billy... where would the typical chav Scooby driver be able to mount the subwoofer?

Used to have a GrpA S4 Integrale with the supercharger and turbocharger but gave no end of problems! Actually I rolled it and wrote it off - was the best thing I ever did!

I am just a little bored with the WR1 and always wanted to build my own engine....built and prepped the rally cars before, but not the engines. So wanted to explore that option now, and build something slowly as funds allow - have around 12k set aside already but that would be easily eaten up for defo.

Not sure of what I 'want' out of it, just curious to build something, but when you know its going to cost a serious wedge of money, I just want to make sure it is done right, but with a personal twist and not follow the norm unless I really have to.

If its not a great idea, and looking at the engine last night, it seems a little tight for all the pipework needed and will require a lot of stuff to be moved or modified. Then I can go back the 'usual' route.

Was thinking of the inlet manifold of either having dual front or rear inputs (sharing the plenum), or 2 separate inlets altogether. Might just have to put a phone cal in to the people who know far more than me!

i quite like the idea of the twinT as you can put 2 B.O.V's on

personally i prefer a single turbo,but a big one like a 20g gt47r,some noise.
