EBC Discs/Pads - Any good ?

Postby Elliot » Tue Aug 05, 2008 7:47 pm

Hi All,

My WR1 had its 50K service today and the dealer has informed me that I need new discs and pads, front and rear.

I declined Subrau's lovely offer of over £1200 plus VAT and fitting for their genuine parts and will buy the bits and fit them myself.

So, this leads me to the decision of what to buy. I have searched through a number of posts and like anything there seems to be mixed reviews and opinions on the different choices out there.

I was going to go for Brembo disks and Ferodo pads but on talking to a couple of suppliers today, Brembo's don't seem to be in stock anywhere which is apparently beacuse of an issue with UK importer.

I was thinking about EBC discs and their Red Stuff pads and can get the lot for just over £600.00 which seemed not too bad. Also liked the idea of keeping the same brand of disc and pad.

Has anyone got any recommendations please on these or other options worth considering. Don't want to spend much more than this having just forked out for the service plus 4 new tyres which I also needed :-(

Look forward to your comments.

Cheers
Elliot

First check if it really does need them, The dealer was trying to get £1200 off you so he's going to tell you they need changing whether they do or not. Quite possible they've got many 1000 miles left in them.

If they do need doing then for pads I'd recommend Pagids, I've had them in the last 3 scoobies I've had and wouldn't use anything else. I get mine from Performance Braking in Monmouth, John Freeth is the boss and what he doesn't know about brakes isn't worth knowing. For road use I think he'll say the RS4-2-1 black pads.

Thanks for the replies.

Yes, they do definately need replacing but thanks for the suggestion Chelspeed.

Spoke to Zen Performance who quoted me just over £700 for the Performance Friction disks and pads which isn't a massive amount more than EBC. Based on this I may well spend the bit extra and get those.

ive got ebc turbo grooved discs all around and yellow stuff pads all around. These are much better than standard discs and pads from cold although i have found brake fade after really hammering the brakes but this was after a good hour of hammering the brakes then booting it then hammering it etc without giving them chance to cool down. When getting the brakes sorted out i would also recommend goodrich braided hoses and 5.1 brake fluid. These make a huge difference to the braking as your pedal never fades away and goes spongy. For the price its well worth it...

If you have 1-2k spare then AP Brakes front and back to balance the car out are the ideal solution but for me on a budget this is much better than stock and certainly worth the 650 it cost me + fitting.

Note some people have said that red stuff pads with ebc discs are an improvement over standard and deal with heat better than yellow stuff so you wouldnt get the brake fade mentioned above but on the downside the normal driving braking wouldnt be as sharp as mine so to speak.

cheers

It certainly isn't the most positive reading!! Mind, Scoobynetters do tend to go over the top a little. I've heard of equally the same amount of people who rate EBC pads and disks.

Yeah, it was that thread which finally made my mind up. I guess that like anything, some people will have some good experiences and others bad but that really put me off.

Its like I was told after getting my EBC setup. If you want decent brakes you go for the AP kit front and back to balance the car out nicely. If you want sharper braking from cold then ebc discs/yellow stuff is fine. If you are tracking the car and seriously hammering the brakes go for something more heavy duty than EBC... :)

Fitted the front disks and pads yesterday. Out with the old.....

And in with the new......

Hoping to get the rears sorted next weekend when the rest of the parts arrive.

So far not noticed any great improvement, in fact at the moment they feel less effective than the original setup which was well worn. Guess I need to give them a few miles to settle down first.
