rear shock replacement outside warranty period

Postby Scooby_simon » Mon Jul 21, 2008 1:38 pm

how many people have had this done outside warranty

I reported it initially on the 17th Nov 2007; My initial 3 year warranty ran out July 07, but as I bought this as this as "Subaru Approved" car I got another 12 months warranty that has just run out.

I've been up to Quinby's and they raised a PWA that has been declined by head office as out of warranty; I've called them (HO) and stated that this was initially reported when the car was in the extended warranty period and given then the job no from Quinby's dated 17th Nov 07. I feel that I should get this FOC as it's a known problem. I'd really like some others to let me know that they have had this done and ideally where, when and even the job number (PM of course)

Many thanks

Simon

Hi Simon, I wish you the best of luck in your quest to get this FOC, I fear you'll be wasting your time. After my warranty "expired" early I had to fork out to have rear struts replaced on my 56 plate STI. thankfully I got a good deal, but it's not the point, Subaru know this is a problem and should replace them even if you are out of warranty IMHO

I still have extended warranty, will this cover this common "rear shocks" problem? Anyone had their rear shocks replaced under extended warranty without a problem???

Feedback greatly appreciated.

What exactly is the problem with the shocks? is it the shocks themselves or the way they are offset? surely if it was the shock subaru should do something if it is a reoccuring problem?

I think it is the design of the mounts.... Just had mine replaced as they were loose... Poor design, not a lot you can do about it unless you come up with a mod of your own, or change for coil overs I think?!?!

Expensive if out of warranty though, first thing you notice is a banging noise from the rear and it isn't when you go dogging either although I think this is more of a problem north of the border!

I thought as much. Crap that is. Coilovers would most certainly be the way forward if you have no warranty and need two changing. Good excuse to mod???

Thanks for the comments guys.

Azyman and Robwils, did you tell Subaru what the problem was and got them to replace under warranty or did you just say there a problem and let them identify it to be the "rear shocks"?

Spoke to dealer and he said he knew what problem would be. I listened first then said I had also read the same on various forums.

Ask them about guarantee on the replacements cos THEY will go too. They seem to have made no attempt to correct the problem....Bloody rediculous, there should have been a new design done and a recall. If this was Ford or Vauxhall the industry would be up in arms and pressure would be brought to recall.........There's NO pressure from us so little action by Subaru.

Subaru UK website, states ProSport are my nearest service centre.

I gave them a ring and asked if they did warranty work, they said they do. So I queried if my rear shocks can be replaced under warranty, they're going to get back to me. Looking promising :)

My 1 was down at ProSport today, they confirmed both my rear shocks have gone:

"Lateral play evident in both rear shocks, plus noticeable softening of o/s/r and notchy operation.

Requires 2x rear shock absorbers."

There now raising a PWA with Subaru Warranty, hopefully get it sorted under warranty.

Approved within a day, then just a few days delivery of new ones.

Service manager did say something about taking slightly longer with the extended warranty as opposed to the up to 3 years, but as it was a day I didn't pay too much notice .

ProSport said Subaru just don't have the staff to keep up with the work load :?

OK I give ProSport a ring tomorrow, see if they heard back and if not I'll call Subaru.

Another question, my osr tyres is almost bald on the inside due to the osr shock slightly pointing outwards. Do you think I could get the tyre under warranty due to the faulty shock or is that asking too much

Phone them direct and put some pressure on them

I took WR1Bro advise and rang Subaru direct, they said they not had a claim yet regarding my car :(

Looks like ProSport haven't even put a claim in even tho it's been 9 days since they saw my car :(

On positive note, Subaru said they wouldn't see any problem approving the claim providing ProSport provide the correct information and everything else was valid i.e. service history which it is. Also said only take them "30 seconds to approve, shorter then the conversation we having".
