Gearbox trouble?

Postby BIG"E" » Mon Jun 09, 2008 7:19 pm

Have any of you had any gearbox troubles?
The syncro on 4th gear has been repaired once,
but trouble is the same symptoms have reappeared.
My WR 1 has only done 20,900 miles.

Never had this problem in over 30 years of motoring with any other car I have owned. :x :x

I got my gearbox checked out before i purchased my car as its whiney and sometimes 3rd/4th/5th can be a bit funny/hard to get into. Was told that the subaru 6 speed box is bullet proof and that i should wait for it to properly go bang before doing anything with it. at most its 1500 to get fully refurbed. He did say a lot of boy racers miss gears like 4th to 3rd instead of 5th by mistake whichc causes probs over time. however if its used normally to its full potential without crunching or missing gears, its supposed to be a good gearbox..

Your boxes must have had a hard life on track or strip lads, as my WR1 box was slick and pure perfection.

Never been on a track or strip!!!!!!!!!
Honest.
Only on the roads and always to the speed limit. :lol2:

Ive been told its not that unusual, to have trouble,
with the gearbox, but it is usually 2nd to 3rd or 3rd to 2nd.

How much is it likely to cost to rectify? ( syncho on 4th)

This is fairly exceptional, I must say.

I've heard clutches go, engines,... but never a gearbox.

I remember my gearbox feeling bulletproof and the clutch being fairly fresh even after approx 23000 miles. And I didn't spare the car. It was a leasecar owned by the very friendly and helpful tw*ts of Subaru Finance and I think most people here can confirm I wasn't 'too gentle'.

Anything different with your gear changing technique ?

Maybe a question here for those with more technical knowledge:
Understand some of the cars have this shorter shift. Physically, this should mean that some elements undergo more strain. Normally i would expect that to be the shift mechanism. Unsure if it would affect the rest though :?

I had to have the gearbox on my RB5 rebuilt thankfully under warranty but this was obviously a 5 speed box
