I have some more issues with the dealer that did the work. So I may get this looked at elsewhere. What's an anti-squeal plate?

I bought front and rear RS29's for £300 delivered. Different disc and caliper set up though. Here's the link - AP 6 pot pads listed at £144 + VAT.

They are just thin plates of metal that go between the back of the pad & the pistons of the calipers. Spread the copper grease over the back of the pad then place the plate over the back of the pad before slipping it back into the caliper.

Don't know how handy you are but it's acctually very easy to replace the pads yourself with the Brembos they are designed for quick pad changes.

If you look at the top of the caliper you'll see there is a pin going across the top held in place by a split pin at one end. If you use a set of needle nosed pliers to remove the split pin the bar then pulls out, then lift of the retaining plate (just a thin shaped piece of metal under the pin that holds the pads in place, it just lifts of there's nothing to undo) giving you access to the pads, you then just lift the pads out.

The squel plates will be stuck on the back of the pad, remove it & spread the copper grease over the back of the pad & replace onto the back of the pad(if you were putting new pads on you would take the plate of the old pad & transfer onto the new pad)

You then are ready to replace the pad in the caliper, you will need to push the pistons back in the caliper to allow the pad to slide back in, use a couple of long screwdrivers & put them down through the caliper &use the shafts not the point to push the pistons back into the caliper & slide the pads in.

Then replace the retaining plate & slide the bar through the top of the caliper & replace the split pin that holds it place - job done.

If you take your time you can't go wrong really, but if your not confidant i would take it to another garage & get them to do it, any local garage would be able to do it for you.

Thanks for your help. I can mess with electric bits, but leave important stuff like brakes to the experts. I'll find somewhere to do them properly.

I just noticed your living in the IOM! Where abouts you from? I lived in Maughold for years, before moving to London to work.

Scott Bradshaw would sort you out - an expert in Scoobies. Not sure how much he charges though.

He used to run a place called Scott Bradshaw Rally if memory serves me. Google doesn't show much, but he might be in the book.

Muppets. I spotted that dealer the last time I was back there (they are fairly new to Scoobies). I asked them what they charged / hour and was shocked when they said £80 / hour. He said Subaru set the prices. Then I told him the two dealers I have used in the UK charge £75 and £66 / hour and they have to cover massive rents / counsil tax.

I didn't like his attitude and never bothered going back there.

I took the car the Southern Performance, who sorted the brakes for me. They seemed pretty good too! Loads of exotica in there including a GT40.

Can anyone tell me if the Brembos are supposed to have shim plates?

Yes they are. Depends which pads you fit as to wether the shims will fit in.

I fitted some "own" brand rear pads and the shims would no longer fit. I wouldn't do this again though as they squeak when reversing.

Southern Performance mentioned to me that there were no shim plates. Would the previous idiots have thrown these away?

Just changed the standard pads for EBC red stuff and they feel fine - loads of copperslip etc. but new pads on decent disks should always feel better than worn out pads.... Just be careful that the pads you use work cold as well as hot - I nearly crashed in a car park when I had DS11 pads in a car - old school! :oops: they never wore out but the discs needed replacing every year.
