IC Spray Query

Postby Megaman » Thu Mar 20, 2008 12:14 am

Just noticed an Intercooler Spray button today when looking round the WR1 which ive just put a deposit on. When would you use this and is there any guide to tell you when to use it? Also do you have to fill it up separately to screen wash?

Cheers

Mega

P.S. Its taken two weeks so far to get the dealer to get the car MOT'd and alloys cleaned up before i take delivery... the waits a nightmare!! :)

To be perfectly honest I never used ours.

I suspect 1/4 milers are the only one that do.

For you to be driving in the style where it would be needed is cuckoo on the road, it really should be automatic like the spec c :?

By the wat you fill it up in the boot on the drivers side a little flap lifts up and the plastic container holds a few litres.

Or if your really cool, you can fit an ecu monitor and wire it into that so that it cuts in at a certain boost level :D

.....even then, it does virtually nothing.

There is a separate tank for this in the boot - takes 5 litres of clean pure water.

To be honest though, you wont use it and certainly wont notice any difference if you do use it.

The tank in the boot seems to empty fast enough though :-)

Sounds more like a boys toy than being useful for anything. Does it get under the bonnet dirty spraying water all over the place or is it quite precise and have a drip tray? lol

It doesnt drip. It sprays a fine mist onto the IC and the cooling comes from the evaporation rather than the coldness of the water.

Indeed, although not very useful as you need it when you accelerate and it's a manual button, so you'd need a third hand to operate it :?

Scoob should once do an auto button so it sprays water when you ask for high boost.

Granted auto button would make more sense... I tend to give it a few squirts if I've been stuck in traffic.

We should move Bro to Oulu. I never need to use the IC spray or additional cooling there !

I have done quite a bit of testing with the intercooler spray system in both stock location and moved to the front bumper on front mounted cars...
Used correctly they can be highly effective...
One of the race cars we look after is a Sierra Cosworth which competes in the Historic Saloon Car championship...
While testing on it's stock intercooler set up it really struggled with charge temps showing 60c and slightly more at times....The Gems ecu it runs of course compensated for this but the lack of power from the loss of ignition timing was very noticable...
Changing to a larger 4 x 4 unit dropped the temps by 10c which helped a bit but still not enough...The rules for the championship state no RS500 style huge front mounts so that was out of the equation as a next step...
So taking Mitsubishi and Subarus lead we decided to give the water spray idea a crack...
Fitting a 5 litre header tank in the car , a low pressure pump and a screenwash jet directly in the air stream prior to the intercooler we noticed a marked improvement in charge temps rarely seeing over 40c..
We have now moved on to the next phase with a high pressure pump and an old fuel injector to improve the mist effect...
We will be testing this system at Castle Combe very shortly and will be doing some datalogging on the Gems to chart the improvements...

As you know the JDM STi have a auto option. On my Spec C in the warmer weather (when we actually get some in this country) it uses about 1 gallon every 100 road miles.

the SimTek ecu has the ability to control the ic spray automatically based on inlet temperature, injector duty and throttle position (i think)
