Service query on a car im looking to purchase

Postby Megaman » Wed Mar 12, 2008 12:02 am

Hiya,

I will be looking at a WR1 tommorow which is a 2004 reg car. However having asked the dealer how many services it has had they have replied that they think it has had 5 or 6. The car has done about 20k miles. If the service book ties with this is it a warning sign to keep clear of it as its clearly not had the 5k services every year. As this has been a weekend car in the past does the low service number matter? Any help appreciated.

Thanks

Do 5k or every 6 months apply.

5k = 4 services
6 months = 7/8 services depending on date of 1st registration, it could have been anywhere between March and August to be a 04 car

Personally if the car has 20k with 4/5 service stamps, it would'nt really bother me, the warranty is out anyway. It's only 5k a year.

5 or 6 does seem plenty for only 20 k miles.

As mentioned, unless it has an extended warranty it doesnt really matter that much anyway. Just make sure they give it a fresh service before you pick it up

If the car was straight it wouldn't bother me either. I'd be more worried about a car that had only done £5k miles.

Okay guys thanks for your help and advice. I knew that it was supposed to be every 6months or 5k miles but if you add it up on that basis i got:
04-05 = 2,
05-06 = 2,
06-07 = 2,
07-08 = 2
Which to me says it should have had 8 services by now. Does anyone know which number service is the equivalent of the 30k big service that I have seen mentioned around the forums?

If you guys are confident that its okay then thats cool.

Thanks once again.

Cheers

The thing is its not every 5000 miles or six months its 5000 miles so if it covers no more that 5000 miles a year it will only need the yearly service around its birthday every year, as such the 5000 stamp would be left blank and the car would still have full service history, the yearly service would be done instead of the 5000 one due to being due to time rather than miles as it would be 12 months since the last service, in the service book there is no time interval for the 5000 service its just there to ensure the car does no more than 5000 miles between services.

The 30K service is the 3 year service from new, so based on its age it should have already had it

Mine has done a similar amount of mileage and has been serviced six times, just completed its 35K intermediate service.

The guy who had it before me only did 3.5K miles in just under 2 years, it spent most of its time in the garage as it was his fifth car. I wouldn't worry about it too much, as long as its had its main service visits and a few others in between it will be fine. As others have said the warranty is out now in any case.

Expect the service book to read strangely, my 10K service was a 24 month service stamped in the book

Servicing for the WR1 is every 5000 miles or at least 1 service a year not 2.
