Rear struts

Postby EVO 3695 » Mon Mar 03, 2008 11:41 pm

Surprise surprise my rear struts are starting to knock not very good as the warranty has run out last May.Does anybody know the price of a new pair fitted and unfitted at a main dealer.Do you think it is worth asking the dealer nicely to do them still under warranty as the car has only done 24,000 miles and not been tracked, raced or rallied !!!!!! Any thoughts gang

It's around £630 for a pair fitted.

Not much chance of getting these on warranty if you were offered an extension and did not take it up.

I just had to pay £255 plus an hours labour for one front strut and my warranty only ran out a month ago.

Fit a set of coilovers, like Designer says £630, a few more quid and a set of AST adjustable coilovers, give powerstation a ring !

I get a scraping/rubbing noise from n/s rear as I let clutch out from rest, thought it may be hand brake but sorted all that inc skim rear discs etc and still noise persists, although no knocking which some guys have had. Nothing obviously loose, maybe the dreaded strut failure strikes again.

At £650 for rear struts, coilovers getting more appealing but has anyone used bilstein struts as alternative?

:wtf2: Not been tracked, raced or rallied !!!!!! It doesn’t need to be the way you drive it on the road you speed freak. You seem to forget, I live near you and can hear you coming from the M5 and that’s miles away :loony: .

I would ask the dealer and see if they want your future business; the bonus is you look like you have an honest face  .

Hiya,
I am looking at another WR1 that I might buy on Mon/Tue next week. What are the symptoms of these struts going so that I can try and test it on my test drive?

Thanks

Ours were more noticeable with slower driving round town etc, you'd hear the clunk, also when stationary you would feel as it the back end dropped down as if it was stuck :?

Sorry EVO3695, I bid up to 326.17, and If I were a second faster, I'd have had a bid in for £360! That's the problem with bidding on a mobile phone! Lost my connection over the mid-wales mountains

Hiya,

I will be getting my rear struts sorted out under warranty. However by the sounds of it they regularly go. When they go and the car is out of warranty, is it worth getting a third party spring setup ?

Do you know of any which dont turn the ride into a hard go-kart style that come with a lifetime warranty? (some for my previous car do)

One other sad thing im going to have to admit is that ive been flicking through the manuals i got with the car and it says putting none standard springs and tyres on the car can vastly effect the airbags working in the event of an accident. This is because the angle things hit the various airbag sensor points of the car are defined for default ride height. Has anyone else considered this when fitting fully adjustable coil over style suspension?

Cheers

Re: Rear struts

Postby John Mc » Fri Jan 09, 2009 8:51 pm

One of my rear struts has started knocking, spoke to KT Green Subaru and they said they normally replace pairs of struts as it was a known problem and if one has gone, it made sense to do both.... £1000 including VAT & Fitting!!!

Reading through the opinions on this and other threads... not sure whether to go for the same replacement with Subaru's 3yr warranty (as Subaru told me they would replace them as many times as required under warranty but I can imagine what will happen in reality if they were to fail prematurely... some clause will kick-in!!) or change for something else that cures the known issue...?!?

Not being a mechanic or anything, I don't fully understand the pro's and con's of the options!!

Any help appreciated... :thumb:

Just had my rear struts replaced today at Town and County Subaru in Aberdeen, luckily 5 days left on the warranty so they absolutely free - would've cost around £600+ fitted! :D

Nowhere near your quote of £1000!! Don't pay it - shop around.

They wanted to charge me nearly £150 for a new battery, as mine was 'on its' last legs'. Told them not to bother as it was crazy when I could buy one from my local garage for £85. Stood my ground, and eventually got one for £85 + vat + fitting. Funny old thing....

It pays to haggle, even with main dealers - especially within the current climate.

They got the last laugh though - washed the car this afternoon and discovered they'd damaged one of the rear alloys!!!!! AARRRGGGHHH!!!!!

Same strut problem for me too . BAH ! I sprayed lubricant onto the shafts 6 months ago and that smoothed it out...Tis back now tho so will have to do something about it.

Other than the "feel" it gives you, is there anything actually wrong in continuing to run like this for now ?

Found an advert for KYB SR Ultra gas shocks for a WR1 for £285 delivered.

Isn't that the same as the Scooby OEM ones--KYB ??

Would appreciate your comments guys. Thanks.

Cheers for the advice, I can't believe that there would be such a difference between main dealer prices!! I'll go back and ask them to check again....!! :?

I'd still like to know whether to replace like for like and accept that the problem is likely to re-occur due to the design problems or go for coil overs?!

I had a knocking from N/S rear and changed struts as got 40% discount by phoning IM Subaru spares direct. I collected from dealer, no problem.

I noticed, however, the rear exhaust mount which drops down vertically was banging on the rear box mount when I pulled away, bent the flimsy mount which hangs down, knocking gone. Worth a look at.

For discount on struts try this. Phone IMGroup, Subaru, Parts dept and make enquiries if they will supply parts at discount, WR1 owner etc etc. I got 40% discount on rear struts delivered to a main dealer next day. Paid at dealer and ftted myself, but dealer would fit. Was refused any discount to WR1OC on a group basis but as I had made the effort to call direct I was OK. This may be a one off but always worth a try in future.

Has anyone had cambelt tensioner changed recently. I get a rattle only at first startup which I'm told maybe leaky tensioner, into Quenby for them to checkout.
