Down on power

Postby Designerman » Tue Feb 26, 2008 12:48 pm

After the rolling road session last Saturday I was a bit disappointed to discover my car was only making 291bhp with 300lb ft. torque.

Two other standard cars both made it into the 320's.

Anyone have any ideas as to why, or any suggestions of an easy fix would be appreciated.

There are some mappers who will check the car over to see why they arent making the standard figures. It costs a small portion of what an actual map would cost, but would give you a great indication of where and why things are going wrong.

have you tried resetting the ECU? If the car is at Tileys today ask them to do it, that COULD be a very quick easy fix, definitely worth a try.

Wouldn't worry about it, Rolling roads can be a lottery :?
My car only made 308bhp and less torque than yours whereas it has pulled over 330 in the past. Car feels really good at the moment so I am not going to let it bother me.

It feels good for a virtually standard car but it would feel better with more power

I checked my previous graphs from my mapper done a week previously....I was dubious as tuners usually give you the best printout and de-tune slightly for safety....but.............

Within 0.5bhp  both on the Dyno Dynamics rollers

I guessed someone was going to ask that question, but I have always used V Power apart from the rare occasion of having to resort to Ultimate.

Had thought of trying this Dan. Read your post too late for me to get Tiley's to do it today.

Have heard of a quick way to do it. Not sure if this is right though.
Disconnect the battery, turn on the ignition and hold the brake pedal down. Comments anyone.

BTW I had to fork out for a new near side front suspension strut..

Thanks Duncan.

I did a bit of searching last night and found a lot of interesting stuff on Scoobypedia about resetting ECU's. As you say newage ECU's can only be reset electronically, but it all got a bit too technical for me.. :?

The debate rages on.....

Maybe your engine was "too loose" before hence the 330 and the bang??

10 BHP is neither here or there on a dyno. I would not worry. A new / tight engine can sap a bit of BHP though.

Next time, just inflate your tyres to 45psi and you will easily make an additional 10 bhp on a DD dyno.

Pasty is definetly the kind of BHP chaser that would pump his tyres up before going on a dyno - i could not agree more!

DSA were inflating all tyres I think... Not sure what pressures they were using.

Joking aside, DSA ran a great rolling road day that everyone seemed to enjoy.

They would not have been inflating, but would have been checking. Some may have required a bit in, some a bit taken out. A decent dyno set up (as DSA is) should do this as a matter of course.

I was interested to see them doing this, and checking oil levels in every car before they ran. WRC tech didnt do either of these things.

WRC tech were a cowboy outfit....end of story. The more cars they could get onto the dyno in a day, more opportunities they had to trot out any one of the following.

a) it's lean, it needs mapping
b) it's rich, it needs mapping
c) That exhaust is restricting it, it needs a 3.5" APS drainpipe.
d) The turbo is not performing, it needs a APS SR40
e) The intercooler needs changing for an uprated APS topmount.
f) Induction kit is rubbish, it needs a APS CAIK.

Hence they would not have the time to check tyres and oil.

In fairness to WRC, when I went to a rolling road they were checking water, oil and tyre pressures.
