Not another warranty claim.........?

Postby Audio-Fusion » Fri Dec 28, 2007 3:14 pm

All,

I suspect that my scoob has developed another fault. Between 3 and 4.5K under reasonable acceleration I can hear a fluttering noise. Is this what people refer to as turbo stall?

What can this be caused by? Anyone had anything similar?

Mine makes this noise since the last map but I was told this was OK and was expected as the turbo was working harder and is now on the limits of what it can cope with. If you've had no mods and this noise has started out of the blue I guess something is wrong? Hopefully someone more technical can advise!

Difficult to diagnose without hearing the noise but when my WR1 started making fluttering noises under boost it turned out to be a loose intercooler pipe.

That sounds like a good starting point. I'll check

SITREP:

The jubilee clamp on the turbo to intercooler hose was a little loose and there is evidence of leakage so I have tightenened that. I also noticed that that hose is covered (on the inside) with a black sticky substance. I am guessing that is carbon. Is that normal?

The problem still remains so I will be calling Bruce @ Waldonway on Wed.

Did you change something recently, ie decat or cone filter? I got the fluttering sound after moving to a K&N cold air induction kit that lives in the wing.

It summit to do with the turbo creating too much boost for the engine to consume, so it flutters as the air gets chopped by the turbo compressor blades. It's not supposed to be good for turbo life, but many on here have had it for years without failure.

The black stuff you see is oil that has been fed in to the turbo induction hose from the engine breathers. You can get rid of it by fitting an oil catch.

It could be the recall Azyman mentioned. All WR1's had an upgrade to the wastegate vacum pipes, as they ran too close to the turbo causing cracking.

I had a similar problem when my car was standard. I remember the words wastegate and sticking being mentioned. Marky Mark will fill in the gaps because I discussed it with him at the time.

Well,

Waldonway have seen it. They have replace the boost control solenoid and are happy that the noise is standard and there is nothing that they can do. :?

I did find loads on the net about it. It seems that it is the wastegate opening and closing which the boost is increasing up to full boost, thus the reason that it stops after 3.5K or so.

Found this on NASIOC which is quite good:
