One for the guys running 400+bhp

Postby pav » Fri Oct 26, 2007 12:28 am

you guys running over 400bhp, are you still on stock internals, clutch and gearbox?
if not what mods to these areas have you done?

Cheers

I would doubt anyone over 400 bhp is on stock internals for long.

Clutch/Gearbox lasting depends on what model / year it is I believe.

We actually don't have many people running 400bhp here. 2 as far as I know and both have done serious work to the internals.

Heard the gearbox and clutch stand up to the challenge easily though.

There are two WR1s with standard internals running over 400bhp.

One of them has a standard clutch and the other as an AP Organic Clutch.

The STI8 bottom end is fully capable of running 400 BHP 100% reliably. You need to look at the rest of the supporting mods carefully though.

It's not something i would advise if you do loads of track days though, or you are complete throttle jockey on the road. I ran one at 405 BHP for 2 years, a few trackdays, and i drove it quite hard on the road and it was perfect.

As long as you look after it, use good oil, drive it with a bit of mechanical sympathy, it will be fine

Clutch and gearbox will fail as a result of torque not power. So a 400 BHP 2.5L new awe car will load the clutch/box a lot more than a 400 BHP 2.0L WR1

Don't worry about the gearbox at all, will go to 500 ft/lb+. Standard clutch is so dependant on how you drive it, some fail at 350 ft/lb, some take a lot more.

Agree with Mark on the clutch. I noticed two guys ho had the same car as me had pretty quickly worn clutches whereas mine still is as new, despite giving the car some stick.

Standing starts are deadly, whatever power you are running.

How do the driveshafts on scoobs take this power, MM ?

Again, its not power, its torque (or sudden shocks) that kills the drivetrain.

Driveshafts again are fine for 500 ft/lb + People only really change them when they drag race seriously or ar above this level

I do wonder about my clutch as it "pongs" a bit sometimes...

Was running 370 for about 18 months never had a pongy clutch and car has now 35k on the clock. Only time was when the car was fairly new and standard and reversing up a very steep incline.

launches kill clutches full stop.

mine is around 400 lb/ft on the std clutch and has done 38000 miles so far with no issues. A jump up to 450 lb/ft would require a twin plate I think as this is already at the advised limit of the organics.

It all depends on the mapping for the internals - if it is det free it might be ok but I would seriously consider changing rods/pistons if going above 400 bhp and using it often :)
