Does the 2.5 have longer rods or bigger bore than the 2.0... or is it a combination of both?

Its a combination of bigger bore and a longer stroke crankshaft.

The rods are actually longer but it's not that that gives the capacity.The stroke is the distance from the centre line of the crank pins to the centre line of the journals X 2. The rods are longer to bring the pistons up too the same height in relation to the cylinder head.
