Multiplier froze?

Postby bob » Wed May 16, 2007 3:05 pm

Went to a rolling road day on Saturday. But as they were not monitoring fueling or boost I did not want to run the car. Luckily Bob Rawle was at the RR and had his equipment so Bob rigged up his gear. Soon as the laptop was switched on we could see the multiplier was at 9 (should run at 16) so we knew there was a problem.
I took the car back to the company that mapped 3 days later and they checked it over The multiplier was still at 9..The mapper could not see why it had drop to 9 and could give no explanation. The ECU was reset which put the multiplier to 8 and within a mile it was back up to 16 and running ok.
It seems the ECU had froze and the ECU was just not learning. As no explanation was found for this, I am wondering if it will happen again. Have to get Bob to check it out next time he is in Bristol.

Can you not see the irony in this post Bob........

Im guessing you had a bad tank of fuel, this is probably the most common explanation for this.

At first this is what was thought...But after 600 miles and 3 tank changes you would have thought the ECU would have learned all was now ok..
Bob tells me the ecu will learn very quickly and when the ecu was reset it did learn within a mile or two.

Why not? Bob is very knowledgeable when it comes to mapping and ECU's.

But did A Jeffries not have to sort out a lot of cars on his rollers that Bob mapped on the road and were fine (where you drive them), because they were detting on his rollers (where you don't)?

Just for info, I'd love to know what the multiplier is that the late great Bob is referring to here. Can the ECU actually suffer with forgetfulness ?

About 14 days ago I started mine up and heard a bleep from the alarm panel. It's never done this before....... from that moment on the car has sounded different, more raucous, more burble and generally louder. I've checked for any sort of air leaks and leaks on any exhaust gaskets and everything is fine. My specialist can only think that maybe the RCM backbox has spit out a bit of wadding but it's really a long shot.

NOW..... Can this reference to the ECU and the Multiplier have anything to do with this phoenomomom....... (issue) ?
