Check engine

Postby Sumo » Sat Nov 20, 2004 4:59 pm

on my way home from work my check engine light has come on, in the book it says that is some sort of emmissions system thingy. Obviously I need to get it checked out asap but I was wondering if anyone else has had any similar experiences............... sumo :?:

Strange. I can't think it's anything major or the car would have gone into a 'safe' mode.

Best to only use it to get to the dealers in on Monday though.

Ok, sensible input time.....
It's probably the oxygen sensor or something like that. Probably got a spike on the reading enough to flash the warning.

Mine came on once on my WRX (2 cars ago) just as I left home for a 300 mile trip. Phoned the dealer in a panic, no problem, turn it off, start it up again, drive normally for a few miles and it will reset. I did and it did. Never came on again.

So unless it's always on or comes on every trip then not a big deal I don't think. Get the dealer to download the faults history log next time you're in to confirm but not even a big enough deal to make a special trip.

Mine just came on today.

I was going round a corner, spiritedly shall we say, and there was a bit of a bump and a judder and the light came on, as if I had quickly lifted off and put my foot down again. Nothing seemed to be amiss as I carried on driving, but it was a weird moment. It was damp so I figured there might have been a slippier patch and the auto diff was adjusting itself - maybe the jolt was enough to set off the knock sensor or something. I've noticed the car sometimes does a weird see-sawing thing round very tight corners that I have always assumed was the diff. Not really the same as this though.

Anyway, I turned the engine off and re-started it 3 times - someone said this would get rid of the light, and it did. Went for another blat to see if it would happen again, and it did. This time I was going straight up a hill so it had nothing to do with the diff and, because I was looking for it, realised what it was - fuel cut off. Full tank of gas so not starvation - it's as if some sensor reported an odd reading and the ECU cut the gas. A second later the reading was normal so it turned it on again. This was OK on the straight - but not at all comforting when you're bombing through a damp corner.

Someone said it's not worth making a special trip to the dealer for, but I'm not sure about that. I'm going to call the dealer tomorrow to get it checked out - curious that this was the first time I had booted it since getting it back from its 6 month service a couple days ago... :?

I also got the dreaded CEL a couple of weeks ago.
I was doing a bit more than spirited driving- I was nailing it sideways round a huge roundabout!
No comments about being irresponsible please, it was the middle of the night and not a soul about. It was fun though!

Dealer looked at it and said nothing untoward, I haven't driven it for about 10 days now so I haven't been able see if it happens again.

Going to RCMS on Saturday so I'll have them take a look.

Oh and welcome wowbagger!

Thanks for the welcome jaycee, although I don't feel all that new - been lurking in this forum since it started. :)

It's much nicer here than, er, the unmentionable other place - where the point of any post referring to a WR1 was sure to be deflected by a barrage of abuse. ;)

Wowbagger

I have had that problem now for a few months. The light comes on during hard acceleration after a calm patch

I went to the dealer the first time it happened and their diagnostics said it was sudden increase in temp from the accuator or wastegate sensor (cant remember which). They are sorting out the recall for me as soon as the bits arrive  before they can sort out this problem.

Heard some1 else having this problem they ended up getting a replacement ecu???

Hope that sort of helps.

It seems to be down to a cracked turbo solenoid pressure line - the one that the recall, sorry, service campaign, was all about. Annoying thing is that I had gone out of my way a couple of times to get them to bother sorting out a replacement for me. :(

Light came back on today so went to dealer. On my car its the wastegate solenoid causing probs reading high temperatures. Got to wait for the recall parts to be replaced before anything is done about this prob.

Oh well
