Gearbox noise

Postby Iain » Fri Nov 12, 2004 1:26 pm

The gearbox on my WR1 makes a strange noise when you decelerate using engine braking. This is particularily apparent when in lower gears, at higer revs and you just take your foot off the accelerator. Unless you hear it, the noise it hard to describe. It's a rough sounding meallic noise that's audible over the general transmission noise. When starting from cold, the noise is not apparent. But after a few hundred yards and a warmer car, the noise starts. It gets worse for a while and then levels out. Subaru reckon it's something to do with a bit of vibration in from the gearing and is normal for this type of gearbox. Is anyone else experiencing this?

Hmmm. I'd be getting a 2nd opinion from another dealer.
That doesn't sound so good.

nope. haven't heard that one ... I do get a quiet whining noise when the engine is cold .... I used to think there was a Police Car or Ambulance approaching from a long way off with its sirens going :?

Not on mine, it sounds the same as the others that I have had,

Would definatley seek a second opinion.

Nope no noise like that here either, as I'm a bit of a boring barsteward without multi-million pound ICE I often drive with no stereo on, and I've never heard any orrid noises at all, only the 4wd whine, but I quite like that noise, its kinda comforting.
So I would say you have a problem that needs sorting. Its time to take any mods off and get a second opinion as above....... sumo

I'm going with the flow here as well in that mine's fine and you've guessed it, get a second opinion on it!

Yeah the second opinon is definitely on the cards. But my dealer is fine, it was a chap from Subaru UK who span me the yarn. I'll let you know how I get on. Apart from that the car is great mechanically and performs as it should  . Oh if you haven't done so already, check the mesh grills on the front of your cars. They are held on by stick on clips and the clips tend to fall off. For some reason the replacements seem to be taking an age to arrive from Prodrive

I'd guess they haven't made enough of them to keep up with the demand of the replacements...

:D

I reckon you could find out where the WR1 owners live just by following the trail of clips on the road

Don't know what the problem is as there are more than enough clips in stock at Subaru UK.

I've not noticed a noise either so I'd definately get that second opinion.

I thought I was the only one to have problems with those bl@@dy clips. My dealer told me that I must have hit a bird to make the grill loose but it has been like that from day one. We had a closer look at it and found that the clips wern't in the right position to grip the mesh. They seem to be positioned for possibly a smaller gauge mesh. I had an oppurtunity to check the grill on Brian's WR1 and his seem to be a more secure fitting.
