Whine tick over & low revs

Postby Paul N » Sun Feb 26, 2006 1:21 am

Anyone had a whine on tick over, worse when cold and can hear in car at low speeds,1st second at low revs
Defo not turbo, makes no difference if clutch in or out, sounds like bearing, suspect PAS pump, but not sure

Cheers

could be right paul, PAS pump should wine a bit more when you turn the steering - i currently have this. Other options are alternator or simply one of the belts.

you have waranty though so would not bother messing yourself :D

Left it at the dealers yesterday, as you say not played myself, sounds to be PAS pump but don't make any difference when moving the wheel, anyway all under warranty, just need to wait for the call.

Just wondered if it was a common problem

Cheers

Had a call from the dealers, it's a bearing in one of the idler rollers for the cam belt, not a common fault aparantly but they have had a Forester with the same problem
Should have it back tomorrow :D

Not a big job to change, cam cover off etc but if the bearing seized or broke up it could / would damage the cambelt and goodbye engine :!:

Ours was worse cold, if you lifted the bonnet and upped the revs to 1500 RPM it was more pronounced, could also hear at low speeds through town with the radio off

If you are unsure I would have checked out just in case, will be all under warranty

This sounds like a problem my 2.5XT Forester is having at the moment...

We went to the dealers last week, the car was making the noise all the way there, i parked up, the service manager came out after a few minutes and the bloody noise had gone! We went on a 10 mile test drive, no noise!

At least know i have something to go back to him with.

Thanks. It may give my dealer a few pointers on what to do.

In fairness to them the noise stopped for the day after a 45 minute run, just as we pulled up at the dealers so they weren't able to diagnose what the problem was. They did come on a 20 minute test drive with me but it refused to make a sound!

Left ours with the dealers, don't know about yours but it was worse cold so made for an easier diagnosis

Yup. It does sound like the same problem.

I've got to call them to arrange to book it in and pick up another car.

Sounds very much like a problem I get when the temperature really dips... :?

Never looked into it. Any idea if it needs urgent replacement when you have the problem ?

Sorry to hear that. I hope it all gets sorted out quickly for you.

Mine seems to still be doing it after its service a week ago. It's been sitting in my garage all week and today's the first time i've used it.

The dealers looked at the problem, one of the staff could hear it and the other couldn't. They did tighten a few bits up in the hope that may cure it.

Looks like it's back to the dealers for me.
