To take a Standard WR1 to a reliable 400bhp and 400+ Torque

Postby WR1 Bro » Thu Jan 19, 2006 3:45 pm

Can this be a serious advice thread.

To achieve the above figures what modifications would you recommend? Please note the emphasis on reliable. Cost not the first concern.

TD05/20G turbo, headers, full decat, intercooler (not necessarily front mount), press regulator, poss injectors, remap, cold air induction.

will think of some more bits in a bit.

Can this all be achieved without the decat?

Probably using a high performance sports cat.

scroll down.

For the best bet, either speak to WRC, Andy F, RCM or someone of that ilk.

AndyF makes hybrid turbos.

equal fuel rails ,
as the power increases the engine drinks some more go go juice,as i beleive the cars are fitted with unequal??or something like that fuel rails ,these ned to be uprated to allow the fuelling to be correct.

IMO the figures are not achievable on a 2.0L. The more bhp you get the bigger your torque gap will be.

400/400 is only achievable with 2.33 / 2.5

400/360-370 more like it on a 2.0L

at 400bhp dont bother pi$$ing around with a TMIC. Far too close to the edge - FMIC required, or if you insist on keeping a TMIC a non-maf ECU that keeps a closer eye on things (motec etc) is required.

to keep it reliable that is

I thought the STI8 TMIC is capable of 400bhp, just.

Anyone going to write the final list then?

you need to look at bros original question - "reliable"

My car is running close to 400 bhp. I tried to get the V8 TMIC to work (V8 scoop and splitters/IC water spray as well). I was advised by Matt Clark to not bother and just put a FMIC on. I didnt listen as i have seen people runing close to this.

I monitor charge temp, and with the TMIC by the time you are in 5th gear you are up at 35-40 deg, keep the foot down and it just keep rising and 50 deg is soon there with det to boot . Far far to high and with the standard ecu not looking at charge temp (only intake temp) to dangerous!

The APS TMIC has been proven as no better than the V8 one! I put a FMIC on and i could hold the thing flat out now for miles without my temp going above 30 deg! Also mine fell to bits and split at the seams with 1.6 bar through it.

A motec ecu or similiar will look at charge temp and retard ignition accordingly - the standard ecu's dont. again Bro wants reliability

The fuel rail mod is good, basically by the time the fuel is round to the last injector it has less pressure. doing the parrallel fuel mod makes the pressure identical all the way round. not neccessary to achieve the power but a reliability mod.

My list.

a turbo thats big enough to do the job at 1.5 bar (no more, pistons fall to bits) and no bigger! TD05/06-20G is capable, Garrett GT35 P18 capable (as on mine)

note you wont achieve 400 ft'lb with these as i said above. to do close to 400/400 on a 2L you will have to run a Twin scroll at high boost, and until someone hybridises a twin scroll to make a 400bhp turbo this wont happen.

3" sports cat DP and system
Tubular headers
Induction kit
Walbro 255 L/H pump
SX fuel press reg
740cc injectors (550 will run flat out at 400 almost)
FMIC -APS/HKS Hyperflow all good
Aftermarket ECU preferably (motec the daddy, link/apexi good also) if not a tek3 remap

a few other reliability things - oil catch can, parallel fuel mod etc will see you there.

This is the same stage that mine is at, over this its pistons, rods etc for reliability.

400 bhp from the engine you have in a WR1 from standard is very achievable.

Firstly a full decat - a custom built system though, not an off the wall silly exhaust that was only built for noise

Secondly change the turbo for a twin scroll. This means changing the injectors and a fuel pump. Again buy the best. Not a sticked up Halfords Special.

Thirdly someone clever to remap it - on a track.

Last a laptop so you can monitor the performance of the car yourself.

If you end up paying in the region of

There is not a twin scroll avaliable to support 400 bhp. people are looking at hybridising them at the minute. One of these will give you torque figures close to your goal (when they are avaliable)

Also if you put a twin scroll on, you will need custom headers, up-pipe and sump. the list is never ending
