Exhaust wrapping

Postby littl`un » Wed Dec 28, 2005 3:14 pm

Which is the best type of exhaust wrap to go for and how much would be needed to wrap headers?

Thanks

are you doing tubulars, or the o.e ones with the heat shield removed?

30M of 50mm does tubular headers + up-pipe with a bit left over for the downpipe.

i use stuff from http://www.proven-products.co.uk/products/cooltek.htm

get some stainless ties to finish the job, wear gloves, and get the wrap damp but not soaking wet to apply.

its not your exhaust as such, more the headers and up pipe. the only reason for wrapping the downpipe back is to keep the noise down.

it keeps the gasses hotter, hence keeps the gas speed up, hence spools the turbo up a tad quicker.

o.e headers have a heat shield around them, but aftermarket tubulars dont so it just gets a touch of the spool up back you have lost by putting the larger diameter headers on.

little,un - unless you are going for a turbo upgrade for 350bhp + you are better off staying with the o.e headers and get them ported. they wont be a restriction at less than that, and you will spool maybe 300RPM later with tubulars.

I had seen another thread which says it is a good idea to spray the wrap with a seal to protect the wrap, am I right?

yep, just use some VHT paint to seal it. stops you steaming at traffic lights in the wet and people thinking therre is something wrong. good pics of my wrapped headers and up pipe here.

no, thats just some pics i have that happen to show the wrapping well. one of them is removing the old blown engine, the other lifting it in after a rebuild hence the painted manifold and cam belt covers.

to remove the headers in the car: exhaust and downpipe off, undertray off, turbo off, unbolt the headers from the heads and the uppipe, then slacken the engine mounting off and jack the engine up a tad to remove the o.e uppipe.
