Grinding on Full Lock

Hello All,

Bought my WR1 a few weeks ago and its running well except for one thing which is bugging me !! I am the least mechanical
person in the world so aint got a clue where to start.

She has a few mods which were already on car when i bought her.

On full lock either way going forwards or backwards there is a terrible grinding and it feels like its trying to jump about and move
and struggling with revs .... .Ive spoken to previous owner who has said it has been like that since he had it 2 years ago and he was told it was the torque
moving around ?

Can that be true or is my diff or gearbox broken ! ha .... told you i was not mechanically minded ! Any help would be appreciated !

Aprat from that im over the moon with it and am planning some little touches myself ( Front end respray, Wheels refurb, Splitter etc )

Scott

Hi Scott,

You shouldnt get or feel any grinding when on full lock? you may feel or hear this when the DCCD is set to manual but other than that no noises should be present when turning
lock to lock :shake:

Could be wheel bearing, drive shaft CV, something catching or rubbing orrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr the front central diff is fooooked. Forget that respray and wheel refurb at the moment, gos you could be doing this............. :crying: :crying: :crying:

Mine is silent, no noises when turning etc. I have read that if the wrong oil is used, especially the rear diff, can cause noises that you describe. You must use LSD oil in the rear diff, contra to what Subaru and others may say...

Alyn Asperformance is up your way, give him a call, im sure he will give you an expert overview of the problem. :thumb:

No fix, seems a fairly common thing, I went to Adam at autotechnica and he assured me that everything was fine and normal abnormal with how it felt/sounded, one thing I would ask though is are you're tyres front axle to rear axle approx the same tread depth?

That thread may be of interest too, I actually own steveyk old car now and it's fine, it had a completely thread bare inside edge of tyre when I got it so I replaced the pair, then thought I heard funny noises on a journey the other day...so have replaced the other pair for brand new tonight...this is pretty much par for owning a wr1 I've found, always something to spend money on!

Some update ish..... Grinding in both manual and auto so she is now in getting painted and I'm away with work for a couple of weeks now ..... When I get back I'm going to get it looked at just for piece of mind by AS performance ( although I haven't spoke to him yet )

Also just had my r diff light come on and flicker randomly but I think that's a loose connection !

It's all good owning a WR1 ..... Ha ha :P

Well it's took a while ....lol.... But unpacked the car and took it to AS Performance couple of weeks ago and the diff is Ok ... Replaced oils and it's much better now and guy from garage said it looked good !

Also had a little service as a treat as it's been locked away as I've been working away !
