New tyres, do I need 4 or just 2

Postby pgudge » Wed Jun 05, 2013 4:47 pm

I need some new tyres on the fronts, and popped in to Motosave just for an idea, and they came back at £125 for Pirelli (Not sure which model, but will check). He then said its advised to get 4 tyres at once with AWD's. I never did with my Impreza 2000 UK Turbo, just swapped good ones to back and new ones on front.

So do I need to be getting 4 at once, or will two new Pirelli P Zero Nero on the front and the already BF Goodrich G Force Profiler 225/40 ZR18 92Y on the back do?

Thanks,

Paul.

I had a problem when i got a puncture a while back. I believe (dont quote me) you have to have the same depth either side and a tolerance of a few millimeters front to back or you chance screwing up the diff? Think it even mentions something in the handbook?
In the end I didn't risk it and got all 4 new.

Yes Subaru told me on my Terzo classic that tread depth needs be the same on each side cause of the awd system but never said anything about the front and rear being different heights.

Thanks guys, I got a better quote for some GT's so I think I will just get all 4 done, he said the backs would need doing soon anyway :)

I'd try another couple of tyre fitters. Suggesting all tyres should be replaced is one route and source for part worn tyres, especially for expensive tyres!!!

The Wr1 is one mean machine, fitting part worn tyres  although this may be reduce the cost, you don't know the history of the tyres, they may look perfectly acceptable with good tread etc but putting 320hp through f*cked tyres!! Need I say more.......the choice though is ultimately yours.

I paid £125 each for Bridgestone Potenzas.

Oh yeah I'd never used part worn tyres myself. I'm just aware it's a little trick tyre fitters can use to sell more new tyres then sell on the part worn tyres.
