P1vsWR1

Postby Knobby » Mon Apr 30, 2012 9:01 am

Gents, Ladies,

As you have probably seen I have had 284 for sale for a while, please see posts in the for sale section.

One of the interested parties I have had is a current P1 owner, Dave, who due to a new baby would like to change to a WR1.

He popped over on Saturday for a look in his P1. Both cars looked great sat next to each other, like a father and son type thing. What struck me was how similar a lot of the minor parts were, especially in the interior. The P1 felt more raw than the WR1, louder, more analogue but less comfy, less space and I reckon probably a little harder to drive fast. Starting to look like a classic now as well. We went for a little drive over the hill, for five seconds the whole of Portsmouth must have heard the burble of subarus!

It was an interesting afternoon and I hope we might come to an arrangement over the coming weeks. At the moment it is still for sale sadly, will keep you all updated.

I am hoping to start a debate here: Would you take a good P1 if offered or stick to your WR1?

I think Dave is a watching member on here, happy to here your opinion as well.
Regards

IMHO the P1 came about due to the need from the WRC for a more compact chassis - hence the 2 door bodyshell.

In it's time it was an absolute stunner - and in many eyes it still is.

However, over the years the breed and engineering has improved so the WR1 is more refined and largly more reliable also.

Horses for courses, and I would happily have both if I could - and merge them together.

Only one way to decide, a mad max style destruction derby race across a post apocalyptic wasteland.

I always say that there is only one question to be asked when buying a car, Could you be Mad Max? And i dont mean in a antisimetic mental australian superstar kind of way.

I had this exact dilemma before I bought the car I did- the WR1

Although I think the P1 is a better looking car personally, it is less practical as a family car and has one big problem - regular engine failures.

I will let you read up on other forums about the reasons why, but the Subaru specialist who I use suspects that every single P1 has had at least one engine rebuild.....

You may be interested to hear that a mate of mine has owned his P1 for ~8 years, is the second owner and it is still on the original engine (probably because it is still sub 30k miles!). It is currently running ~400bhp courtesy of RCM and he only lets RCM touch it (except Bob Rawle for mapping).

He let me take it around Donington at a track day last year and it felt much more raw than the WR1 - better feedback, more adjustable and felt significantly lighter, it was pretty damn awesome. The extra power helped but he also runs stiffer ARBs and the full AP brakes kit front and rear which were awesome. The WR1 feels heavier and a bit more ponderous but is still a lot of fun and much more refined. The WR1 certainly serves a better role if you have to ferry a little one to nursery as I do in between track days/weekend blasts.
