Rear Shocks Gone

So the inevitable has happened - my rear shock absorbers have started to knock :(

Im thinking of getting these shocks and getting my local garage to fit them as other people have mentioned them on here, can anyone confirm if they are the right model please?

I assume the WR1 uses the same shocks as a normal STI and its the springs that give the lower ride hight?

Is it just a case of using the new shocks with the old springs etc or will anything else need replacing?

same product is regularly for sale on Ebay from The Motorists Centre for £284 pr so the Camskill deal looks good.

In the short term, get the wheels off the ground and spray the shafts regularly. It's kept mine in quite good nick for the last 2 years. I just get an occasional "feel" of a clunk but never with any sound.

Just to confirm - WR1's use the same shocks as a normal STI Impreza despite the lower ride hight?

Same here..... :wink: whiteline grease sprayed on the shaft with teh dust covers pulled back :thumb:

See the link below where you take them apart and fix a greasing nipple which is used alot in the US to good effect.

If its only just knocking then here is what I did...

I jacked the car up, pushed back the plastic outer strut cover to reveal the inner chrome strut and the then sprayed it with silicone spray (not too much) and then lowered the car and jacked it up a few times so that the silicone got in and lubricted everything ....

fixed my knocking completely

I've got a similar problem with the rear n/s shock knocking. Having a look under the rubber collar there are clear signs of contact all over the piston so I have ordered a couple of the standard rear KYB Ultra SRs from here:

Came to around £210 delivered which was cheaper than Camskill. Should tide me over until I get the AP brake kit and then look into coilovers. Hopefully this may be useful for others in the same boat...

mine is booked in for x2 new rear shocks/fitting and full geometry with crossroads for £450 :D happy with that :) :) :)

That's good, my local dealer quoted just over £500 for one side only!

I was going to have a crack at changing the rear shocks myself but having spent a few hours changing the rear ARB today (drop links were a b!tch to get off due to corrosion) the clearance to the lower bolts looks tight and apparently they are extremely difficult to get off without a hefty impact wrench. I may see what quotes I can get from a couple of friendly garages...

The question I have is how- I don't believe it (imagine Victor Meldrew voice)?! The parts alone are well over £450 (the labour isn't a big element of the job). The full geometry must be £75-100 in itself. I assume that this is some kind of warranty job or other concession?

He charges labour at £55 an hour (way under dealers) and assured me he would only make around 5% on the parts. The shocks alone were around £500 with his modest mark up. I still can't see how they can do all that work unless they are doing it for love and don't mind losing money! It just doesn't stack up-or the car you are taking in isn't a WR1.

Main stealers will get huge discounts on parts as they buy as Subaru UK so the buying power will be way beyond an independant!

I expect crossroads may actually pass this discount on and charge a nominal % profit on cost for the parts.

The labour will still be the usual rates but as they need to keep operatives working thats why teh material discount occurs.

No point having someone stood there costing money doing nothing by trying to make a huge mark up on parts and bidding yourself out of the market!

That would be great thanks. If they are prepared to sell the shocks that cheap there could be a rush on buying rear shocks!

I'd like to think you are right but it seems to me that people on the boards either use a Main Stealer or an independent. Those determined to get a main dealer service stamp in the service book never seem to hear that the service is normally as good (in my experience much better) from independents and a hell of a lot cheaper. As they have got a captive audience and they know people will always use them I am cynical that main stealers would cut the price on parts-but you may well be right and the invoice later this month will tell us for sure!

Blimey, who'd have thought that getting a good deal would create so much crap!! :lol: :lol: :lol:

I'm also thinking of having a samco pro-r set of hoses fitted, does that need investigation? :lol: :lol: :lol: :arrow:

No, exactly the opposite mate I am chuffed to see someone get a good deal. I am interested because when the next bit of work needs doing on my car i will be looking round for a deal to match yours! :D :D :D

My setup was a little out on the front end as well, and man alive does the car feel better :D
