not starting or turnover & then low revs

Postby delrodney » Tue Sep 27, 2011 9:41 am

experienced this problem a couple of times over the last 4 months or so.

turn key and nothing happens.
after charging battery for an hour, car starts, but ticks over at such low revs, circa 200rpm. every time i pull up at junction, i fear car is going to stall - but hasn't.
i replaced battery (with a quality one) immediately after this issue.

however, problem hit me again at w/end.
came to start car and nothing happened.
charged battery for an hour and car started ok.
drove about 300 miles round trip and car was ok.
24 hours later. car started just, but revs again at tickover only 200rpm & close to stalling when coming to halt.

additional info:
no lights being left on
car not even locked / alarmed (garaged - well secure)
had local garage check it yesterday and problem didn't show. all they did was check battery was charging (with lights on/off). revs were normal at tickover!

anyone any ideas pls, before i book it into keith price at abergavenny?

thanks in advance.

sounds like mass air flow sensor for your revs dropping off. you could have a drain on your electrics some where causing the flat battery.

thanks.

would the low revs be intermittent then, if the sensor is faulty?

yeah it can be and wont always show on diagnostic equipment.
check your air box is fastened properly at the bottom, if its not it can pull hot air in causing the revs to drop.

Yes, just this week.
Scooby Projects in Ledbury. Identified that the alternator was the cause. Only collected car Thursday pm and haven't used it since, so I'm hoping when I go and turn the key, my baby will start and run well. :D

I had similar problem too. Thought it was battery as it would go flat every couple of weeks. Sometimes the car would not even turn over and alarm would go on it's own battery. Connecting battery charger reset everything tho. Other times I'd be driving and the car would start to misfire and run at low revs. Finally after messing around with voltmeter and turning lights or fan etc. on made virtually no difference to alternator output so I got alternator tested. Same prob low output, had it rebuilt and all ok. Don't bother running around with side lights on and battery ok. The alternator is a smart one tho and output is related to the electrical load drawn, apparently to give it an easier time.

Apologies reviving an old thread but I've got a repeating problem with power too. Had 2new batteries in the last year and my alternator reconditioned. After the first dead battery I checked one of these forums that indicated I could use sidelights to force the alternator to charge as I do frequent short trips. Thought this was helping until this weekend when no joy starting her up. I do have an intermittent issue with lack of noise from the radio mainly after bad weather but can get the sound back if I fiddle with the window controls-specifically the window lock button. Taken the car to my local stealer before who said there was no electrical fault but I though there must be if the radio doesn't always function. Could this be a power drain, if so any suggestions, and would it be enough to kill the battery. I use the car most days so it's not sat around for long periods. Cheers, Pete

Although you had the alternator rebuilt it could be worth getting it checked out and also current drain from battery with the engine off. If the alternator has a fault it can drain the battery when engine off and also not put out enough volts when engine running. The radio prob sounds like a poor connection maybe aerial or power supply also check the fuses for any corrosion where they push in. Also have a look at the earth connections to chassis to check for poor connections.
