I think I have it figured out! I have so much wax on my car I have reduced the drag coefficient :)

I've just driven as economically as possible down the M4 on a full tank. pretty much at a constant 70mph. Fuel light came on at 256 miles. . . . 400 miles would be impossible at this speed! The guy must have a larger tank, or as some of you suggested a smaller turbo!?
I have to say, driving at a constant 70 in the 1 is as interesting as watching paint dry. If someone has the will power, it may be worth trying a tankful at 50mph. . . not me though!

I drove to Gatecrasher in Birmingham from Hayling Island near Portsmouth, filled the Wr1 up to the brim from empty £72.
Drove at 70-80mph on the way up, and drove back beetween 60-70mph, fuel light came on 2mins from home 336miles. :D I couldnt believe it!
