Steering strangeness

Postby Steveyk » Mon Jul 04, 2011 12:38 pm

Has anybody ever had a slight graunching or clonking sensation through the steering wheel when you pull away from a standstill? I've noticed this a few times lately. There's no play in the steering, I'm hoping it's not a diff problem :?

if the fluid is low or the aux belt badly adjusted that will affect the "feel" of the steering..........

Belt is fine, fluid is fine. Thinking about it, it started when I changed the discs and pads, could it be something to do with the stupid noisy grooved discs?

Taken the wheels off and checked the pads etc, one nut on the passenger side was barely tight. Will see if it makes a difference later. Cheers for the pointer pal!

It seems that the noises were being caused by the dreaded loose exhaust heatshield! it is totally loose and rubbing one of the steering column UJ's. Only thing is, what does it fasten on to? there are two captive nuts on the heatshield but nowhere to fasten it to. What do I do? I've jammed it against the other bit of heatshield for now, which has stopped the din for now.

I suspect this may also explain the vibrating noise I've been getting on the overrun for months...

I remember a former WR1 owner kev had this, but in such a way it jammed his steering causing his steering to lock and head toward the hedge, luckily he manage to stopped withiut doing any damage, but he did shat himself.

Then when under a some numpty garage inspected it he was told steering rack was fooked at around £1500 to repair he decided to cut his losses and sell the car for peanuts...... only to find out from the lad who brought it just had the heat shield retightened !

Problem solved, two big jubilee clips are now clamping the shield to the turbo end of the up-pipe. Will have it welded when it's serviced this time, unless it's worth having an aftermarket up-pipe fitted?
