Rear suspension knocking
Right so ive taken my 145 into 3 different garages now. The first said that just my rear shocks need replacing, the second was the prodrive garage and they seemed to think that the whole rear suspension needed replacing and then the third said it was a loose bearing so i ignored him !
ive decided that i might as well get the whole suspension re-done but trying to find the parts is proving to be a massive pain in the backside ! Can anyone offer me any advice as to where i can find what i need or does anyone know the dimesnsions of the rear suspension because one garage said if i knew them they could fabricate me some new ones... 
Rear shocks for sure common Fault .. ppl have had them replaced fro FOC @ Subaru .. but will only last 6 month ..
Best thing is to do is to Bin them and fit some Coilovers like .. BC Coilovers .. good price and Good Shock's

The question has to be asked which is it! The effect of all three should be quite different. If it is a bearing you shouldn't notice much noise until the car is travelling at a reasonable speed (I would have guessed 35-40mph upwards). If it is the shocks (the most likely problem by far) it will show clearly at very slow speeds over bumps, turning/ reversing in a car park and stopping etc. You might also find that when you stop at a junction the back end feels like it drops an inch or so on one side or both. With the third one you say the whole suspension needs replacing what does this mean? The rear shocks and top mounts are just part of the suspension. If the whole things need replacing has the car been accident damaged or heavily rallied? I am guessing if the problem is that great it much show up greatly in the handling and corners must be pot luck!
from what you've just told me, it certainly isnt the bearing and is more than likely the shocks because it is when travelling at low speeds and reversing that the knocking is noticable. The car certainly hasn't been in an accident or over used as I had an independent check run on the vehicle before I purchased it so I'm thinking perhaps Pro-drive wanted to make a little more money out of me than necessary?
So i have almost certainly established the rear shocks are my problem, now I've just got to find someone as a friend of mine is a mechanic with a history of owning scoobies who will fit them for me at the minimal cost ! thanks so much for your help
Normally you can tell while releasing the handbrake the rear end will drop slightly as if it were snagged.

Unfortunately the costs with Subarus are normally in the parts rather than the labour. Replacing the rear shocks and top mounts is probably 1.5 hours worth of work. The official Subaru parts are going to be in the £700-750 range. Aftermarket parts can be fine but you are still going to spend this amount or more buying them (although the better ones should long outlive the official part). If you don't do so already I would also strongly recommend you look at an independent Subaru specialist rather than main dealer. The labour rates will be considerably less, often they are more knowledgeable and they will use far cheaper but equally as good aftermarket parts. I had a good laugh recently when the specialist I use told me Subaru charge £250 for a pair of front pads alone! If you can post which part of the country you live in a member of the boards might be able to recommend a good independent specialist local to you. L
yeahh now you mention it mate that does happen. It handles like a dream so I can't imagine it's anything more than the shocks I'm in the Manchester area, I just want to get it done as soon as possible really so I guess I'm just going to have to bite the bullet and prepare to console my pocket ! i,ll vouch for that mate adam did my shocks for me,i got the kyb gold ones of the net as they are the same as the o.e ones £about 260 pair if i remember any do me just fine ,(doesnt get thrashed though

i know it's an old thread, but thought i'd tag on the end as i believe my lovely is in need of rear shockers too. two questions: i'd be grateful if someone could recommend a decent replacement (it's still got the original set on) anyone know of an independent in my area - herefordshire? it's always been taken to keith price (abergavenny) main dealer, but i thought i'd perhaps try an inde just for this work. edit: i do take, "total impreza" magazine, but haven't seen an inde advertised for my location. cheers Trev

What is the best way of detecting a possible failure on the way?
I get a knock when I change from forward gears to reverse and vice versa, but that is linked to the Brembo floating calipers...

check to see if the rear driveshafts dont need regreasing this caused a rear knocking on mine.
