Service intervals + whats done at each one (newbie help)

Newbie here requiring some info on the service schedule of the WR1.

I take it from reading its every 5k miles or 6 months whichever is sooner?

Is there any info on what is required to be checked/changed at each service point?
e.g. I've read cambelt (+ any other belts?) are done at 50k/5yrs.

Does the servicing alternate between minor and major services?

I'm looking at a WR1 with circa 20k on the clock and full Subaru SH so by my calculations it should of had circa 12 services up to now, the owner says its not had a cambelt change (well he's going to check it later this week) so this would need doing ASAP.

It should be serviced every 5k or once a year what every comes first, So it should have at least 6 stamps,
Main services are 30k 50k ect But your's should have had a mian service after 5 years what every the milage is,
Timing belt should be done as it's over 5 year old, If not it's a good bargaining tool,
Take it for a test drive and make sure there's no knocking from the rear struts very common problem and bout £700 to put right,
Make sure the car has it's WR1 tax disc holder plaque keyring ect if not then knock his price down again :wink:

How much would the cambelt change cost at a Subaru dealer or a Subaru specialist (approx)?

I looked at one yesterday as the lady was local to me and worked at the same place as me but decided i would spend a bit more and go for a "minter" (i'm used to new / nearly new cars).

She said servicing intervals were 5k / 6 months....obviously 12 months between services would be much better as you state they are, dont know why she wouldnt know that? :?

Are WR1's every 5,000? All other Impreza's of the same age are every year or 10,000

I believe a service is due at every 5000 miles or every 6 months whichever is the sooner. The regular oil change is one of the critical parts. My car has been done ever 6 months from new and has 14 stamps in the book.

Changing the Cambelt isn't an expensive job through an independent specialist but Dealers will charge through the nose. The parts are probably the dearest bit as the tensioner often needs changing with the belt. That being the case the parts are about £200 plus a couple of hours (tops) labour. If it needs doing though and you need it as a haggling point quote the dealers price which is probably nearer £7 or 8 hundred!!

When the WR1 was first sold to satisfy the warranty conditions.

You had to have it serviced every 6 months or 5,000 miles for a so called power check.


Then every 12 months or 10,000 miles it has to be serviced as per the schedule in the service book.

Crockel isn't far off the mark....

Got my 5 year service done recently inc the cambelt, and shopped around the main 'stealers' in N.Scotland for a decent quote. Ranged from £650 - £700+ :shock:

Went independent instead. Less £'s and far more knowledgeable (thanks Wuz). :wink:

Basically is the servicing every 6 months then with the "interim" service at 6m/5k miles being an oil/filter change only and the 12 months/10k mile being the "proper" service?

I heard something about A, B, C etc services, can someone elaborate if i'm correct and what these are?

OK found a post by Ant:-

The thing is its not every 5000 miles or six months its 5000 miles so if it covers no more that 5000 miles a year it will only need the yearly service around its birthday every year, as such the 5000 stamp would be left blank and the car would still have full service history, the yearly service would be done instead of the 5000 one due to being due to time rather than miles as it would be 12 months since the last service, in the service book there is no time interval for the 5000 service its just there to ensure the car does no more than 5000 miles between services.

So a low mileage car which is doing less than 5k a year will only have the yearly servicing done, no interim 5k servicing (oil/filter only?).
I do approx 8k a year so probably better for me to get the interim done at 6months/4k miles and then the yearly one done on its birthday when it would have another 4k miles more on the clock (8k over 12 months).

Confirmed the above with Cottons Competition...but....

Would you deem the following service history acceptable on a WR1?

Car reg 05/04
07/04 @ 1500 miles (Free 1000 miles service in book)
10/04 @ 5600 miles (@5k service point in book)
05/08 @ 15600 (@10k/12m service point in book)
05/08 @ 15600 (@15k service point in book)
Note both above done at time in book.
06/09 @ 16200 (@20k/24m service point in book and "only lube service" is written)

1st Owner seems to have gone solely off the mileage and not any time restrictions.

Any advice appreciated.

I did mine off distance but when I realised that I wasn't covering 5k per year I just had an oil/filter/fluid change and check as an interim service just to keep it tip-top.

TBH - as long as it has been serviced every 5k you can't really go that far wrong just my opinion though
