got a problem with my rear end!!!!!
when i pull away really slow with no throttle just letting the clutch up i get a lump from the rear. its as the car is moving so not taking up slack in the diff. its like the drive shaft or diff is locking as looking from outside the car it tries to lift the car very very slightly as the wheel dont want to turn, it can be felt when pulling away normally as well, you just feel a lumping and the car not fully willing to go.if i put the diff controller in manual the problem gets worse and worse the closer i get to locking the diff.
how can using the controller work the rear diff, could it be a rear diff prob or if it has a limited slip diff is that working properly or even worse is the diff wrong or ben replaced with the wrong ratio, mine says 43 on the botttom.
going slowly round a rounabout the other day it went bang/lump in a big way and the back end seemed to jump out of line, frightened the life out of me.
sorry to run on but am desperate, im a mechanic so understand fairly well.took the driveshfts out tonight and checked all joints but are all good and still sealed from new

sounds like the diff to me mate. have you checked the diff oil

yes. diff oil is fine and level is good. does anyone elses lump about when the diff controller is only up two points from the bottom

Sounds to me the gearing in the diff maybe fooked, If your a machanic then strip the diff and see whats causing the problem,

i have no idea how the gearing can change, i could look inside the diff but wouldnt have a clue whats right or wrong if its over complecated. just trying to narrow down what it could be by seeing how others react when using the controller. if it needs another diff then i will get one but dont want to if others act the same.
if the controller works the gearbox how can i effect only the rear end.

Sounds like rear shocks, diff shouldnt clunk like that unless more locked than that...

can anyone tell me the exact ratio the rear diff should be on a wr1, its something like 4.4:1 3.5:1 3.9:1

Must admit the symptoms sound the same as i had when my shockers were shot. When you come to a stop, does the back end drop after say 10-20secs? felt like someone had nudged me from behind

also when down the pit watching it as somone moves it you can feel the driveshaft sort of jumping, (hard to discribe)

might sound daft but are your tread deapths pretty equal ?

tyres all the same. 40k miles. just been out and worse when reversing as notice it when backing car into garage if you go up one on dccd its worse if you go up two to first orange and are on lock it will stall the car if you just slowly come of the clutch with no throttle. probably gonna try another diff but just hope it aint a gearbox problem.

Don't think you have got any problem. Sounds to me as if you don't know how to use the DCCD.
Leave it in auto or fully open and see if there is still a problem.

You certainly don't use it in reverse; thats why you are getting jumping and horrible noises.

Your problem is most likely the centre diff doing its job.

yes still a problem just magnified by using the dccd , i normally leave it in auto and had dccd on my old type r impreza.

Ours was the same when moving off, and also when coming to a stop backend drops !

Was the steering being turned, when up on the ramps, I've only used the dccd to find that it jumps when turning and at slow speed.

Is the dccd working perhaps a fuse, switch, sensor may be faulty


Other than that strip the diff, but never heard a diff going before!

went to my local impreza breaker today in brooke norolk, he drove car and said def something wrong but not sure what, he has replaced the center diff on imprezas before but mine not showing bad symptoms of that but thinks the noise is coming from rear diff but not commom though, i got another diff from him to try and may do it tommorow but due to the answers about the rear shocks im gonna try them first i think, he has secondhand ones there but would prefer new, any ideas, on ebay they sell non genuine ones in pairs for 275 has anyone tried these or heard anything about them or know of any good secondhand ones ie low milage.

also if anyone is interested he has two wr1 sitting there which he is breaking one is on ebay with rear damage selling for 6995 but will break whole car if someone first buys the engine or 6 speed set up as its only done 18000 and another one with front end fire. this is the 5th one he has broke so numbers left must be falling.

Personally think you'd be better off getting a set of coilovers, exe-tc are what a few of us have but are costly, I have heard good reports on or bc's which are around £650 MarkyWR1 has them on his, but as all things it depends on budget, but dont put original s/hands one on as they will probably go again

was looking at the BC's on RCM today...seem quite good value.

Can deffo reccomend the BC's, really good value for money compared to what stock shockers cost from a dealer

Hi can recommend bc coilovers i fitted them to my 1 and i had them set to soft and they felt softer than the original setup but i have now set them about half way and they feel perfect you will just have to raise them up about 5-10mm because they rub on the front on the setting they come at so 10/10 for price and ride from me

which version did you guys go for?

I am looking at the remote resevoir option.

Hi there sorry for late reply as im sunning it up in florida lol But i went for The BR series coilovers about £650 work great and cheap.But if you are looking at the ER series wouldn't you be better of buying a better make shock ?

I run Reiger's on the rally car, so wanted the ER series remote resevoir option same as the rally units. Still good value at that price IMO.

What other options are there for about £1500??

AST start from £1k or just get exe-tc an be done with it
