rear knocking

hi there can anyone help?had my rear shocks replaced and there is still a knocking noise been to subaru dealer but they cant find it they can here it but cant locate it?say its nothing major but its annoying ,dealer said its a common fault on all 03-04 sti cars?be greatfull for any help.thanks kim

HI ZEDDER its not the shocks had them replaced in sept09,and the noise was still there its annoying big style but they say what ever it is its nothing major any ideas??kim.

Hi Kim. I know we've been talking about this problem......but HOW can the dealer say that they don't know what it is, THEN say ........but it's nothing to worry about and that it's nothing serious ???

Like the guys say, there's NOTHING to stop it from being faulty shocks again.They can GO again in no time at all. Was the noise there immediately after they fitted new shocks ?

What did you pay because I know you said that it was out of guarantee ?

Could it be the diff taking up the slack?

Am the same av got a knocking noise when pulling away,

Took it to subaru and they said it was nothing to worry about

They said it was my diff taking up slack and my shock were ok,

Going for coilovers anyway to see if that helps

I've got the same as you Foley, although it's more of a clicking noise than a knockig noise. Subaru said the same and also when I took it Adam @ Autotechnica, he put it up on the ramps and moved the wheels by hand and you could hear the same noise.... nothing to worry about!!

It's nippy as fook though But i supose it's one of these things you just have to live with,

Sorry to hear about the problem Kim.

I think if you take it to a good garage who give high priority to customer care you should be able to get it sorted.

I live right at the southern end of the country and the local independent garage I use is Subaru4U.

I had problems with a noise occurring at the front end when the car went above 50mph. They drove it and listened and whilst they could hear it couldn't immediately establish what it was. So they suspended the car on the ramps in their workshop one guy sat inside and got it up to 50 mph and another mechanic went round all the bearings with his listening kit (sorry don't know the name!). They then switched over and repeated the exercise. The first mechanic didn't reveal his thoughts so they could see independently what they concluded. Afterwards both agreed everything seemed okay except the front drivers side wheel bearing sounded noisier than all the other wheel bearings. When they stripped it down they found that it hadn't failed but there was some slight wear to one side.They replaced it and the noise stopped.

If they hadn't been able to detect the problem that way they tell me they are able to place sensors around the car near where the problem is (bushes, bearings etc) and they then have a bit of kit for listening to the noise inside the car whilst driving. This can help them narrow down what the problem is more easily.

In terms of customer service I couldn't fault the effort they went to. Maybe you could check with other well regarded garages near you what extent of diagnosis they are prepared to carry out.

I hope that helps and also gives you hope. There's nothing worse than having an irritating noise on the car and that feeling it is never going to get sorted.

PS I hope you have checked your tyre pressures- I rightly got a telling off from The Swede recently. If the pressures are low it will make the suspension noisier!

yep foley have been told it could be that subaru thought it was nothing serious but its b****Y annoying might just have to get used to it kim

hi mick me again payed £362 for both sides fitted but if anything the sound was worse!!so could it be the top mounts or as foley says propshaft take up kim.

Kim am I right in thinking you own No.216, if so I owned it before you.

I can confirm that it was doing the same thing for some time before I sold it, I had also had the rear shocks replaced just as the warranty was running out even though they weren't knocking. The noise started around 6 months after the new shocks were fitted and it annoyed me too.

As you say I assumed it was the shocks but wasn't prepared to replace them again after only 6 months.

I'd take it to a well regarded independent subaru specialist and see what they say. I can't see that it is anything serious though, I had it serviced at RCM a very well regarded subaru specialist a few months before I sold it and they found nothing wrong with it other than suspected rear shocks.

How's the car going otherwise? Be great to see some pics

subaru did "BIG"E but did not mention them so i will get it checked on a rolling road to see if they can locate it thanks kim.

£238 then it might not solve it thats good money if you can get it

i will empty your ashtray for £50 but im not going say it will solve the knocking noise

CV joints may be dry and need lubrication, common fault on my old dustbin4x4,

Give a subaru specialist a call and ask them if this could occur !
