Locked Diff

I read on here somewhere that putting the diff in fully locked mode at slow speeds can cause damage? It doesn't mention anything in the handbook..

Surely you should be able to put the diff in any mode at any speed without doing any damage...?

Nope, you know when you turn left, the left wheels rotate less than the outside wheels?

Well locking the diff forces all wheels to rotate at the same speed. When at speed this is fine as the inner wheels can skid, however at slow speeds i.e. when parking you will notice if you leave it locked that your car will crab and put a lot of strain on your cars diffs making clunking noises. To repair a diff thats gone costs thousands I believe so the general rule of thumb is if its dry or mildly wet dont lock the diff at slow speeds. Most people seem to run the diff on auto or fully open (which lightens steering) unless on a mission to have some 4wd fun or to get out of stick situations like snow etc..

In locked it is 50/50

What about in fully open? Does the front get any power or is it all to the back?

I'm sure you still get 20/30% to the front when the dial's wound right back?

in the DCCD service manual it has all the splits. There is a link to it on here somewhere...or somebody has previously posted the pages on here before.

In fully wound back it is an 80/20 split...

I think in auto mode it shifts the power around depending on if you are going straight or round a corner. i.e. it unlocks the diff and sends power to the back as you turn into a corner allowing tight cornering, as you start to straighten up after hitting the corner apex and floor the power, the power then gets moved back to all 4 wheels and the diff gets more locked to give maximum grip around the corner.
