Dont expect any performance gain though, and go for a dry (STi) or lightly oiled (K&N etc.) one.

I had a STi panel filter and never any problem. No idea why you would want to put oil into your air system with some of the filters. It makes no sense. MAF doesn't need oiling!!

you take the filter out of the car, clean it in oil, let it dry, then replace it ya numpty... ya dont poor oil over the filter whilst its in the car normally...

lol - watch someones gonna prove me wrong now and i will look a right idiot

No you don't....Ya numpty.

Most of the quality filters that are cleanable you wash out in a soapy solution, put it in the airing cupboard to dry, then thinly coat it with the correct oil. Very thin stuff in an aerosol can normally. K&N do there own oil. Its almost like WD40 it's so thin.

The dry ones like Sti items you can clean them a bit with an airline in a fashion, but in reality they are not re-useable so best just chuck them and buy another one.

Ya numpty.

Do you look a right idiot?

Foley - they will fit a standard one unless you specify otherwise.

One would have thought that given the weakness of the pound that the STi filters will be even more expensive.

I would go for a Green panel filter, the ST1 ones are a lot more expensive and do drop the BHP by around 5-6hp.

Trust you to prove me to be a numpty... although you do re-oil them out of the car, that was the point i was trying to make. Bro made it sound like he was oiling it in the car...

Either way I stand proud as a numpty 8)

I am baffled to find out that an STI filter knocks 5bhp off the car!
Why is this?
What's the best one to fit?

You're no numpty Mega !

This has been an interesting thread guys.

I have the K&N ( RCMS) cone filter. It's probably been on for the last 10-15K miles without a clean. Should I ask the garage to blow the airline through it when it has it's service on Wednesday ?

(That's blow from inside to out !!!!)

Scooby magazine, which has now ceased being published did a test with panel filters and found that the STI filter dropped 6bhp,not that you would notice that on a 320bhp engine,I think that the metal plate with STI stamped in it blocks air flow, but thats just my theory, the STI ones are very pricey though.

Interesting to hear that about the sti filters Chris, i have one in mine & didn't really notice any difference either way but as you say that much difference isn't really noticable.
