so the speakers and head unit are going to have to be replaced before I change anything when I eventually get one...?

are there 6x speakers or 4x...

Do you know what size they are?

is dynamat sound deadening? Is it heavy and how about fitting? is it hard to fit it all...?

Yes, that is exactly what it is. I believe you can get some ligther dynamat which is more expensive.

Fitting depends on you. My limit is a spot of oil and lots of petrol. Therefore, I would not begin to change a stereo. Having seen others do it I guess it is fairly easy with the right tools. Since I own a hammer and a spade I'm not really set-up for the job.

dynamat is pretty much a thin layer of tar stuck onto the back of self adhesive pads.

Does an awesome job of reducing any vibrations. I put it on my projector mounts to stop any unwanted building vibrations disturbing the image.

To get it into awkward places you can use a heat gun to warm it up and bend it better. A good sharp knife is always handy too.

is there a disadvanage of having it?

where do you ahve to stick it? all panels? Or ones that are likely to vibrate? will it weight you car down loads...?

There is always a downside to somethings!

By adding the dynamat, you help reduce these panel vibrations.

You can stick it where you like, but most people put it on the door skin and in and around the speakers.

You can always take away the factory sound deadening stuff to re-distribute the extra weight. Lots under carpet and behind rear seats. This will all add extra kilo's.

As Caveman says sharp knife heat gun, plus a 1" roller as well so as you lay it you roll it to remove any air bubbles and give it a good adhesion to, got the liteweight stuff fitted, inside of the door is covered along with the door card and around the speakers....only downside is you really cover every bit you can and the electric window or door handle are needed to be got at it is a bastird

I got a pioneer dvd/mp3/sat nav double din head unit to replace default one for around 700-800 notes... then changed all four speakers for better ones... however the newer ones are only a fraction better than standard and if i was to do it again id spend a lot more than 200-300 on speakers... i also have dynamat in the doors which helped a lot...

I made the mistake of listening to the local subaru garage who told me they had an audio genius who fits all their stereos who would sort me out. I didnt give the guy a budget just said i want the best quality and loudness speakers i can get in the WR1 that will fit.. i do seem to remember a lot of people advising me that subaru doors are very thin so choice of speaker is limited unless u carve away the door or something..

Has anyone got any photos of the stereos they have installed? I am looking to change the standard unit as well as trying to get an idea for alternatives and something that fits with the look of the interior.

I would go for any touch screen double DIN head unit, Kenwood, Alpine, Pioneer etc...

Or you can get a in car PC with touchscreen. Hide all the PC gubbins away and get XP on your touchscreen. Then add a USB GPS sensor and wifi for a complete in car entertainment system.

There is a not much depth for fitting speakers so you have to make up MDF spacer rings to allow you to fit speakers with deeper magnets NOT HACK AWAY AT THE DOOR
There are plenty of sites with the pattern for making the mdf spacer rings like scoobynet. You can also use corsa spacer rings from the likes of halfords they fit to.
