Cylinder Head GasketsI take it there are 2 on the boxer engine? Are they liquid or 'solid' gaskets? Anyone know how long it takes to repair them?
Not sure about the newer ones but back int' day when I wer t' lad * they
had 2 solid head gaskets. * I'm speaking 25 years ago!
I was watching "Megafactories" on Discovery and they showed the Ferarri 599 being manufactured from raw materials and when they built the engine section they used liquid gaskets for the cylinder head which I was surprised at.... wondered what they were on the '1'
2 solid gaskets, one for each bank.
How do you mean repair? you cant repair the gaskets, you have to put new ones on. If they need replacing its an engine out job. A couple of days to do it yourself if you know what you are doing. If you don't know what you are doing a couple of days and then a few weeks while you have the engine rebuilt... If JP is Roland Rat, them I am Errol the Hamster... His number 1 fan.
Was it as good as the WR1?
I meant to repair a head gasket if it was a 'liquid/non solid' one but I didn't know whether it was solid 'replacement' or liquid 'repair'. Thanks for the information though.
I watched that too, I thought the liquid gaskets were only to seal up the sand casting blocks...as each engine and head block are formed in new sand casts every time.
Others use the same casting block over and over and over. I would of thought any truely 'liquid' gasket would be a pretty crap affair, so it may be liquid at the application stage, but will dry or cure to form a 'solid' gasket there after?
I saw them applying what I assumed was a liquid gasket to the block prior to hoisting the head on? This was in the clean area, no sand or anything (much further down the production line!!)
May be wrong though
