It's to do with the reduced limited slip and more lock as you move from the lower green setting on the DCCD to upper setting of "lock".

Lower being more open and more power to the back wheels, upper being more permanent lock 50/50 front/back left/right, meaning both left and right wheel rotate the same amount so when turning sharp on a small manoeuvre means the inner wheel is travelling less then outer causing the car to "crab" causing the noise, where as if it lower setting the inner wheel is free to move less then the outer hence no noise. Auto monitors the car and "auto" adjusts according hence your not experiencing any problems on auto.

I know my explanation isn’t 100% correct but it’s sufficed to point the point across. Others feel free to correct me :)

No probs, your welcome :D

I would advise keeping in "auto" till you understand the DCCD as explained in detail in this thread:

Yer you dont really want to be locking the diff and trying to turn at low speeds - stresses a lot of parts and you will also find the car will crab rather than corner properly.

Provided they are same size and equal-ish tread depth no need to worry, as you will find front will wear more quickly than rear.
