People

Spoke to the wife earlier (im currently abroad) and she informed me that the Malfunction Ind Lamp in her 54 plate wrx had came on yesterday.
In the manual it mentions something about Emission Controls, the car had just been had it's 50k service the day before by our local garage (no subaru)
Obviously she will be in contact with the garage when it opens after the weekend.

A bit of a long shot but does anybody have a clue as to what the problem may be?

Cheers.

Is the malfunction light the same as the classic subarus "CHECK ENGINE" light?

Only going off the manual, the light indicating something has been detected from the on-board diagnostics. Most likely a chance from the service, maybe something as simple as incorrect oil, etc. I would advise it's not driven till a Subaru dealership or the like (who can read the error from the on-board diagnostics) have looked at it and rectify the problem and potentially prevent any costly repairs.

I'd also defo not drive it.

Could damage the cat which is an expensive item to replace.

I've once had this with my STi after over-reving it. According to the dealer I blew out the cam sensor.

Since you're abroad, I bet your wife will enjoy driving your WR1

Theres a way of self diagnosing on the classic subarus which i have done with my p1 in the past but im unsure whether this is still the case with the new age cars.

Google search it, if its possible it will save you a few quid.
